It is to be regretted that Petri of Nyland, in 1582, left nothing on record as to the sources, origin, history, or naionality of his words and tunes.

These Pia Cantiones range from the 10th to the latter part of the 16th century, and they are the products of various countries, the composition of many minds. Lon., John Johnston, at York St., Covent Garden This scarce and interesting edition of Purcell is not in the British Museum printed catalogue. Arne, for this recical (Dec. 13, 1770) wrote a new overture, eight new recitatives and songs, chiefly to supply those of Purcell, which were lost. So, far frem mutilating Purcell, he rescued those beauties from oblivion which time and ignorance had obscured.

A Remarkable Collection of 19 Volumes published between the Period of 1747 and 1789, and containing the Songs sung by the Celebrated Singers of that period at the pleasure gardens resorted to by the fashionable folk, the merchants and the prentices of London town. They are issued with the words, with a harpsichor and a flute accompaniment, and in many cases in full orchestral score. Man of the volumes are dated with others, an approximate date is noted on the titles. There are 12 volumes of Vaux Hall Gardens, 5 of Ranelagh Gardens, of Marybone Gardens.
