LITERARY

LITERARY INTELLIGENCE.

Mt. George Chalmers has made confiderable progrefs in a new edition of the works of David Linafay. It will extend to three volumes, 8vo.

The fame author is alfo diligently proceeding in his Caledsnia, which is an hiftorical and topographical account of Scotland in the manner of Camden's Britannia.

Profeffor Vince has almost completed the third volume of his Aftronomy.

A new edition of Pinkerton's Getgraphy is at the prefs, with the affiftance of profeffor Vince.

The indefatigable Mr. Malcolm is alfo employed in a new work, which is to be called a Picturefque Tour, and will be embellished with various Plates, executed by himself.

Dr. Young's Lectures to Royal Inflitutes are printing in two volumes 4to.

Mr. Hayley is earnefly employed in writing a Life of Romthe Painier, which is to be accompanied with a variety of engravings from fome of his moft celebrated pictures.

Dr. Symons has made great progrefs in a new Life of Milton.

A complete edition of Dryden's Werks, with a Life and Critical Notes, is preparing by Walter Scait, Efq. Several volumes are printed.

The English edition of Giraldus Cambrenfis, by Sir Richard Colt Hoare, Bart. is in great forwardness and will be published early in the fpring, in two volumes, 4to. It will be a fplendid work, containing many picturefque and monumental engravings. A fmall edition of the original Latin is alfo printing.

A Life of the unfortunate Irish Poet, Thomas Dermody, in two volumes, will be published in January.

Mr. Edmund Turnor's Hiftory of the town and Soke of Gran tham, will alfo appear early in January. It will be printed in large 4to.

The third volume of the new edition of Bloomfield's Norfolk Hiftory, containing the first part of Norwich, will be ready by the 1ft of January.

A Differtation by Mr. Faber on the Prophecies relative to the great Period of 1260 Years; the Papal and Mahommedan Apoftafies; the tyrannical Reign of Antichrift, or the Infide! Power, and the Refloration of the Jews, will be published in the courfe of this month, in two volumes, Svo.

ART. 1. The History and Antiquities of the Deanery of Craven, in the County of York. By Thomas Dunham Whita ker; LL.D. F.S.A. 4to. Price 31. 3s. Payne. 1805.

IT is no eafy matter to give a fatisfactory account of a work like the prefent in the compass of a few pages. We fhall however, immediately, and without hefitation, give our opinion that the publication before us is one of the most comprehenfive, most elaborate, and at the same time one of the most elegant and cheap of all the modern topographical productions which have come before us. It is remarkably well printed, the plates are very numerous, fome of them very beautiful, and all of the neatest execution; the arrangement alfo of the matter is as perfpicuous as poffible. The Deanery of Craven comprehends a large portion of the Weft Riding of Yorkshire. It confifts of twenty-five parishes, very numerous townships, and its population extends to 44,643 fouls. It comprifes altogether a beautiful district, equally interefting, as the author obferves, to the botanist, the mineralogift, the antiquary, and the
