first perfon advanced to the dignity of a baronet, then inftituted by K. James I. in the 9th year of his reign. He married Anne, fole daughter and heir of Edmund Butts, of Thornage in com. Norf. Efq; (Brother to Sir William Butts, Knt.) by Anne his wife, daughter and coheir of Henry Buers, of Barrow in Suff. Efq; By this lady Sir Nicholas came poffeffed inter alia, of the manor of Foxhead, and three parts of the eftate of Sir Andrew de Buers, who lived temp. Edw. III. (a). and by her had iffue nine fons and three daughters. The fons were, 1. Sir Edmund, his fucceffor; 2. Henry, who died at Jerufalem without iffue; 3. Sir Robert, of whom hereafter; 4. Bachevell Bacon, of Hockham in com. Norf. Efq; (who married Mary, daughter of Thomas French in com. Effex, and left two fons that died young, and three daughters who were coheirs to their brother, viz. Mary, married to Sir Robert Baldock, Knt. one of the judges of the common-pleas; Philippa, to Robert Keddington, Efq; and Anne, to Nich. Rookwood, Efq;) 5. Sir Butts Bacon, of Mildenhall in Suffolk, created Baronet July 29, 1627. (who married Dorothy, daughter of Sir Henry Warner of Mildenhall, Knt. and relict of William, fecond fon of Sir Robert Jermyn, Knt.) ancestor to those late of Heringfleete, and to the prefent Sir Edmund Bacon, of Gillingham, Bart. (of whom in its proper place ;) 6. Nicholas Bacon, of Gillingham in Norfolk, Efq; (who married (b) Ift, a daughter of Sir James Wefton, baron of the exchequer, by whom he had only one daughter, married to Sir John Rous, of Henham in Suffolk, Bart. and 2dly, Margaret, daughter of Euftace Darcy, of Norwich, Efq; by whom he had Sir Nicholas Bacon, of Gillingham, Bart. fo created Feb. 7. 1661 (c). which title expir'd with his fon Sir Richard without iffue; tho' the estate is in the prefent Sir Edmond, of Gillingham.) 7. Sir Nathaniel Bacon, of Culford in Suffolk, Knight of the Bath, who married Jane, daughter of Hercules Meautys, Efq; (widow of Sir William Cornwallis, Knt.) by whom he had iffue one fon Nicholas, who died without iffue male, and two daughters, Anne, (married, firft, to Sir Thomas Meautys, Knt. fecondly, to Sir Harbottle Grimfton, Bart.) and Jane, who died unmarried. Sir Nicholas had two other fons that died young. The three daughters of Sir Nicholas the first Baronet, were, 1. Anne, married to Sir Robert Drury, of Hawfted in Suffolk, Knt. 2. Dorothy, married, first, to Sir Baffingbourn Gawdey, of Harling in Norfolk, Knt. and, fecondly, to Philip Colby, Efq; 3. Jemima, to Sir William Waldegrave, of Smallbridge, Knt. Sir Nicholas, and his lady, lived fifty-two years together in wedlock, and dying within a fhort time one of another, fhe anno 1616, he not long after. They both

both lie buried in Redgrave church, under a moft magnificent altar tomb, with both their effigies curioufly carved in full propor tion out of the fineft white marble, with the following infcriptions. The Body of Nicholas Bacon Knight and

The inquifition after the death of this Sir Nicholas, dated 7. Nov. 1. Car. I. fays, he dyed 13. Nov. 22. Jac. I. and Sir Edmund Bacon, Knt. and Baronet, found fon and heir of the faid Sir Nicholas and Anne his wife, and 50 years old. The manors he died feiz'd of were Thornage, Melton, Cockfeild, Edgefeild, Great Riburgh, Woodhall in Great and Little Riburgh, Egmore manor and advowfon, Chofel, Studdey, Bruningham, Gillingham manor and advowfon, St. Mary's and All-Saints, Hockham magna and advowfon in Norfolk; Redgrave, Mettingham Caftle College Rectory, with many others in Suffolk and Effex; a feoffment recited in the inquifition (b).

Sir Edmund, the eldeft, fucceeded his Father in the title and eftate, and married Philippa, one of the daughters and coheirs of the right hon. Edward lord Wotton, Baron of Marley; but dying without iffue April 10. 1649. lies buried at Redgrave aforefaid, under a handfome mural monument, with this infcription, Within This Vault was laid The Body Of Sir Edmond Bacon Knight And Baronet The Eldeft Son of Sir Nicholas Bacon Baronet And the Husband Of That Lady Philip Bacon mentioned In The Other Table, April The 10th 1649. He was fucceeded by Sir Robert, his next furviving Brother, known before by the denomination of Robert Bacon, of Riborough in Norfolk, Efq; (an eftate now in the family) where he mostly refided, and in that Parish Church was buried with the following infcription.

Robert Bacon of Redgrave, in the County of Suf-
folk, Bart. was buried the 16th of December 1655.
and Dame Anne Bacon, his Wife, was bury'd the
27th of September 1640.

He married Anne, daughter of Sir John Peyton, of Ifelham in Com. Camb. Knight and Baronet, and had iffue by her, nine fons and three daughters, viz. Edmund, Nathaniel, Henry, Francis, and Drury, who all died young; Nicholas, who married Margaret, daughter and coheir of Hobart, of Thwayte in Norfolk, Efq; but died without iffue. The other fons were, Robert the eldeft, who married Catherine, daughter to Grave Violet, of Pynkney-house near Taterford in Norfolk, Efq; and dying in his Father's life-time, Aug. 25, 1652, was buried at Redgrave, leaving iffue one fon, Edmund, fucceffor to his grandfather, and four daughters; 1. Jemima, married to Thomas Gardiner, of Effex, Efq; and after to Sir John Brattel, Knt. Affay-mafter of the Tower of London; 2. Philippa, married to Sir George Reeve, of Thwaite, Knight and Baronet; 3. Frances, to Paul Bockenham, of Great-Thornam, Efq; 4. Anne, to Edmund Yaxlee, of Yaxlee, Efq; all in the county of Suffolk.

Butts Bacon, Efq; another fon of Sir Robert, married Dorothy, daughter and coheir of Sir John Tracey, of Stanhow in Norfolk, Knt. and was Father of Sir Robert, hereafter mentioned.

Peyton Bacon, Efq; another fon, married Eliz. daughter of Charles Suckling, of Wotton in Norfolk, Efq; Sir Robert's Daughters were, 1. Philippa married Hamond Claxton, of Levermore; 2. Anne, to Thomas Hunt, of Sharington; and 3. Alice, to Richard Gwyn, of Fakenham Market, Efqs;

Sir Edmund, only furviving fon of Robert, aforefaid, fucceeding his grandfather in title and eftate, married Elizabeth, one of the daughters and coheirs of Sir Robert Crane, of Chilton in Suffolk, Knight and Baronet, by whom he had iffue, fix fons and ten daughters; all of which, except four daughters, died unmarried before him. The fons were, 1. Robert; 2. Nicho3. Edmond; 4. Edmond; 5. Philip; 6. Francis. The daughters were; 1. Sufan; 2. Elizabeth; 3. Catherine; 4. Jemima; 5. Jane; 6. Sarah. Thofe that married were, 1. Frances, to Walter Norborne, of Calne in the county of Wilts, Efq; (by whom he had iffue only two daughters, Elizabeth, married to Edward Viscount Hereford, and Sufan, to Sir Ralph Hare, Bart.) 2. Sufanna, to Charles Morris, of Loddington in Com, Leiceft. Efq; 3. Elizabeth, to Wil

liam Ettrick, of the Middle-Temple, Efq; and, 4, Philippa, to Sir Edmund Bacon, of Gillingham, Bart. (Grandfather of the prefent Sir EDMUND of that Place.) Sir Edmund Bacon, of Redgrave aforefaid, died Sept. 12. 1685, aged fifty-two, and lies buried in that Church, under a noble mural monument for him and his lady, with the following infcriptions.

After Sir Edmond's Decease without iffue maie, the title and part of the eftate defcended to,

Sir Robert Bacon, his coufin, fon and heir to Butts Bacon, Efq; which Sir Robert, was before feated at Egmore in Norfolk; and after the death of his coufin, Sir Edmund, was poffeffed of the eftate at Redgrave; which defcending to him under fome Incumbrances, he thought convenient to fell that eftate to the lord chief-juftice Holt, and afterwards purchased at Garboldisham in Norfolk (a), where he built a handsome feat for the future refidence of his family. He died Jan. 31. 1704. and lies buried in the chancel of All-Saints church in Garboldifham, under a handsome monument, with this infcription,

Under this Marble is buried the Body of Sir Robert
Bacon Baronet who departed this life on the 31st
of January in the year of our Lord 1704. and of his

His lady lies buried in Wyghton-church in Norfolk, with the following infcription over her; (c)

quem alterutrâ amplectens ulnâ fecum hinc tulit decem. 21. Anno 1686. fuperftite adhuc prole natorum 4. filiarum 2. He left iffue by the faid Elizabeth his wife, daughter to Daniel Chandler, of London, Efq; two fons, Sir Edmund, his fucceffor, and Butts, who died unmarried 1725-6, (Nathaniel and Robert, his two other fons, having died young before him) and two daughters Abigal, and Jane, who died unmarried.

Sir EDMUND BACON, of Garboldifham in Norfolk, the prefent Baronet, reprefented the borough of Thetford in parliament the 9th; and the countyof Norfolk, the 12th of Queen Anne; and was also chofen one of the Knights of the Shire for the faid county in the laft parliament; and is one of the Knights of the Shire for Norfolk, in the prefent parliament, which was fummon'd to meet June 13, 1734. He married in November 1712, Mary, daughter of Sir Robert Kemp, of Ubbeston in Suffolk, Bart. (and fole heir to her mother, Letitia, daughter to Robert King, of Great Thurlow in the county of Suffolk, Efq;) which lady died Sept. 1727, leaving only four daughters, Letitia, married to Armine Wodehoufe, Efq; fon and heir apparent to Sir John Wodehoufe, of Kimberly in Norfolk, Bart. and one of the representatives in parliament for the faid county; Mary, and Sarah, who are unmarried; and Elizabeth, who died unmarried, May 1738.
