5 And David answered the Prieft, and faid unto him, Of a truth, Women have been kept from us about these three Days, fince I came out, and the Veffels of the young Men are holy, and the Bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were fanctified this Day in the Veffel.

6 So the Priest gave him hallowed Bread; for there was no Bread there, but the Shew-bread that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot Bread in the Day when it was taken away.

7 Now a certain Man of the Servants of Saul was there that Day, detained before the LORD; and his Name was Doeg an Edomite, the chiefeft of the Herdmen that belonged to Saul.

8 And David faid unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine Hand Spear or Sword? for I have neither brought my Sword nor my Weapons with me, because the King's Bufinefs required Hafte.

9 And the Priest faid, The Sword of Goliah the Philiftine, whom thou fleweft in the Valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapt in a Cloth behind the Ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it for there is no other fave that here. And David faid, There is none like that, give it me.

10 And David arofe, and fled that Day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the King of Gath.

11 And the Servants of Achifh faid unto him, Is not this David the King of the Land? did they not fing one to another of him in Dances, faying, Saul hath flain his Thoufands, and David his Ten thoufands.

12 And David laid up thefe Words in his Heart, and was fore afraid of Achifh the King of Gath.

his Behaviour before Abimelech : who drove him away, and he departed.

9 O fear the LORD, ye his Saints: for there is no Want to them that fear him.

10 The young Lions do lack, and fuffer Hunger: but they that feek the LORD fhall not want any good Thing.

11 Come ye Children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the Fear of the LORD.

12 What Man is he that desireth Life, and loveth many Days, that he may fee Good?

13 Keep thy Tongue from Evil, and thy Lips from speaking Guile. 14 Depart from Evil, and do Good: feek Peace and purfue it.

Is The Eyes of the LORD are upon the Righteous, and his Ears are open unto their Cry.

16 The Face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the Remembrance of them from the Earth.

17 The Righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their Troubles.

18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken Heart: and faveth fuch as be of a contrite Spirit.

19 Many are the Afflictions of the Righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.

20 He keepeth all his Bones: not one of them is broken.

21 Evil fhall flay the Wicked: and they that hate the Righteous fhall be defolate.

22 The LORD redeemeth the Soul of his Servants: and none of them that truft in him fhall be defolate.

PSAL. LVI.

E merciful unto me, O God, for Man would swallow me up: he fight

2 Mine Enemies would daily fwallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.

s Every Day they wreft my Words: all their Thoughts are against me for Evil.

6 They gather themselves together, they hide themfeves, they mark my Steps, when they wait for my Soul.

7 Shall they escape by Iniquity? in thine Anger caft down the People, O GOD.

Thou telleft my Wandrings, put thou my Tears into thy Bottle: are they not in thy Book?

When I cry unto thee, then shall mine Enemies turn back this I know, for GoD is for me.

10 In GOD will I praise his Word, in the LORD will I praise his Word.

Gath was the City of Goliah, to which David now fled from the Perfecution of Saul.

11 In GoD have I put my Traft: I will not be afraid what Man can do

unto me.

12 Thy Vows are upon me, O GOD: I will render Praifes unto thee.

13 For thou haft delivered my Soul from Death: wilt not thou deliver my Feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the Light of the Living,

CHAP. XXII.

Companies refort to David at Adullam. 9 Doeg accufeth
Ahimelech. 11 Saul commandeth to kill the Priests.

'DAVID therefore

departed thence, and efcaped to the Cave Adullam; and when his Brethren, and all his Father's House heard it, they went 'down thither to him.

2 And every One that was in Diftrefs, and every One that was in Debt, and every One that was difcontented, gathered themselves unto him, and he became a Captain over them and there were with him about four hundred Men. 3 And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab and he faid unto the King of Moab, Let my Father and my Mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you till I know what GOD will do for me.

4 I looked on my Right Hand, and beheld, but there was no Man that would know me; Refuge failed me; no Man cared for my Soul.

s I cried unto thee, O LORD, I faid, Thou art my Refuge, and my Portion in the Land of the Living.

6 Attend unto my Cry, for I am brought very low: deliver me from my Perfecutors, for they are ftronger than 1.

7 Bring my Soul out of Frifon, that I may Praise thy Name: the Righteous fhall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with

me.

4 And he brought them. before the King of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the Hold.

5 And the Prophet Gad faid unto David, Abide not in the Hold, depart, and get thee into the Land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the Foreft of Hareth.

6 When Saul heard that David was difcovered, and the Men that were with him (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a Tree in Ramah, having his Spear in his Hand, and all his Servants were standing about him.)

7 Then Saul faid unto his Servants that ftood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites, Will the Son of Jeffe give every one of you Fields, and Vineyards, and make you all Captains of Thousands, and Captains of Hundreds.

8 That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my Son hath made a League with the Son of Jeffe, and there is none of you that is forry for me, or fheweth unto me that my Son hath stirred up my Servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this Day? 9 Then answered DOEG the EDOMITE (which was fet over the Servants of Saul) and faid, I faw the Son of Jeffe coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the Son of Ahitub.

10 And he enquired of the LORD for him and gave him Victuals, and gave him the Sword of Goliah the Philiftine.

11 Then the King fent to call Ahimelech the Prieft the Son of Ahitub, and all his Father's House, the Priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the King. 12 And Saul faid, Hear now, thou Son of Ahitub And he answered, Here I am, my LORD.

To the chief Mufician, Maschil, a Pfalm of David, when Doeg the Edomite told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the House of Ahimelech.

HY boafteft thou thyself in GOODNESS of GOD endureth CONTINUALLY.

2 Thy Tongue devifeth Mischiefs: like a fharp Razor, working deceitfully.

3 Thou loveft Evil more than

Good and Lying rather than to fpeak Righteoufnels.

Thou loveft all devouring Words, O thou deceitful Tongue.

for ever, he fhall take thee away, and $ GOD fhall likewise destroy thee pluck thee out of thy Dwelling-place, and root thee out of the Land of the Living.

6 The Righteous alfo fhall fee, and fear, and fhall laugh at him.

7 Lo, this is the Man that made not God his Strength: but trufted in the abundance of his Riches, and ftrengthned himself in his Wicked

nefs.

13 And Saul faid unto him, Why have ye conspired a8 But I am like a green Olive-tree gainst me, thou and the Son in the House of GoD: 1 truft in the of Jeffe, in that thou haft gi- Mercy of GOD for ever and ever. ven him Bread, and a Sword, caufe thou haft done it and I will 9 I will praife thee for ever, beand haft enquired of GOD for wait on thy Name, for it is good behim, that he should rife against fore thy Saints. me, to lie in wait as at this Day?

14 Then Ahimelech answered the King, and faid, And who is fo faithful among all thy Servants, as David, which is the King's Son-in-law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine House?

15 Did I then begin to enquire of God for him? be it

far from me let not the King impute any thing unto his Servant, nor to all the Houfe of my Father: for thy Servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.

16 And the King faid, Thou shalt furely die, Ahimelech, thou and all thy Father's House.

17 And the King faid unto the Foot-men that stood about him, Turn and flay the Priefts of the LORD; because their Hand alfo is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not fhew it to me. But the Servants of the King would not put forth their Hand to fall upon the Priefts of the LORD.

18 And the King faid to Doeg, Turn thou and fall upon the Priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the Pricfts, and flew on that Day fourfcore and five Perfons that did wear a linen Ephod.

19 And Nob the City of the Priests, fmote he with the Edge of the Sword, both Men and Women, Children and Sucklings, and Oxen, and Affes, and Sheep, with the Edge of the Sword.

20 And one of the Sons of Ahimelech the Son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David.

21 And Abiathar fhewed David, that Saul had flain the LORD'S Priefts.

22 And David faid unto Abiathar, I knew it that Day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would furely tell Saul: I have occafioned the Death of all the Perfons of thy Father's House.

23 Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that feeketh my Life, feeketh thy Life: but with me thou shalt be in Safeguard.
