CONNECTICUT.

Hartford District.

-The Hartford District League held its annual meeting in Branford the 31st of August and the 1st of September, in the Swedish Lutheran Tabor Church, of that place. Branford is a beautiful little place on Long Island Sound and has a population of about 7,000. Lutheran Church is the only Swedish one in the community and has a membership of 515. The congregation owns a handsome church building and parsonage of value of about $12,000, free from debt.

A new organ has recently been installed. The meeting began on Sunday morning, August 31, with service and a sermon by C. H. Nelson, of New Haven. In the afternoon most of the visitors arrived and at 3 o'clock a program was rendered. After the program was ended refreshments were served in the church parlors and opportunity given to all to greet old acquaintances and form new ones. At half past eight in the evening the Luther Leaguers assembled in the church and an interesting program was rendered. On Monday morning at 9:30 the business meeting commenced. Mr. Martin A. Wickstrand, vice president of the League, conducted the meeting. Reports show between 600 and 700 members in the Leagues in this district. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, C. Hilliker, president of the local League, extended greetings, and Mr. John H. Swoyer, president of the District League, responded. "The Devotional Side of the League" was discussed by Mr. Earl H. Courter and echoes from the State convention were given by Mr. L. M. Shupe.

In the afternoon Mr. Paul Pairun addressed the convention on "The Luther Leaguer and Church Attendance." Mr. G. Elmer Swoyer spoke on "The Unifying Influence of the Luther League." Practical talks on various phases of "The Model League" were given by delegates chosen from various local Leagues. The afternoon's session was concluded by an address on "The Luther League's Attitude Toward Other Organizations in the Church," by Mr. Carl H. Boehm.

In the evening there were two addresses. Rev. E. F. Ritter spoke on "The Lutheran Church and Her Message for This Age," and Rev. R. E. Golliday addressed the audience on "The Mission of the Luther League."

The following officers were elected: President, John H. Swoyer, Ashville; vice president, L. M. Shupe, Amanda; recording secretary, Elsie Barthman, Columbus; corresponding secretary, Laura E. CALIFORNIA.

-The ninth annual convention of the Central California District Luther League was held in Bethel Lutheran Church, San Jose, Cal., Rev. Emil Meyer, pastor, September 1, 1913.

Words of welcome were fittingly spoken by Luther Meyer, president of the local League, to which a response was made by Mr. J. C. Frohliger, the president of the District League. Several very interesting letters were read from Rev. J. C. Pedersen, of the Muhlenburg Mission, Africa. Rev. Pedersen was the organizer of the District League eight years ago. Among the other interesting features of the ⚫ program were a paper on "The Luther League" by Myron Hestorff, of Salenas, Cal.; an address on "Labor Day," by Rev. J. E. Hoick, of San Jose, Cal.; an address by Mr. J. C. Frohliger, of Oakland, on "Thy Kingdom Come." The topic, "Grace, Grit and Glory," was handled in a very helpful manner by Rev. N. N. Harter, of Salinas, Cal. Papers were read by Miss Lois Meyer on "What Benefits We Derive from Con

ventions," and one by Mr. R. C. Reschar on "Shall the League be Active in the Bible School?"

"The Luther League of the Pacific Slope" was the topic of a very interesting address by Rev. Emil Meyer. Action was taken looking toward the unification of the District Leagues on the coast, with the purpose of holding a joint convention in 1915 at or near the Exposition City. On that occasion it is hoped to have a Lutheran Bureau of Information established in San Francisco for the benefit of visiting Lutherans from all lands.

It is possible also that the West will extend an invitation to the international organization of the Luther League to convene on our territory in 1915.

Excellent music- was rendered by a quartet of visiting ministers and delegates, and a bountiful repast was furnished by Pastor Meyer's hospitable people.

The newly elected officers of the District League are:

President, Mr. C. C. Krueger, Oakland; secretary, Luther Meyer, San Jose; treasurer, Myron Hestorff, Salinas; corresponding secretary, J. E. Hoick, San Jose.

The next convention will be held in the First Lutheran Church, Oakland, May 30, 1914.

OREGON-WASHINGTON.

-This Bi-State Luther League held its convention in Seattle September 25 and 26. It is expected that a complete report will be in hand in time for the next issue.

-On Friday evening, August 29, the Luther League of the First English Lutheran Church of Oakland, scarcely six months old, gave its first social and entertainment to the congregation and its friends.

An excellent musical program was rendered, supplemented by a short speech by the president, Miss Crowhurst, and a brief address by the pastor, Rev. Harvey M. Leech.

As a result of the social the League met the balance of a $25 pledge for repairs to the church recently made and an additional $5 pledged toward insurance on the church building.

On September 4 this League held its semiannual business meeting and elected the following officers: President, William B. Scheehl; vice president, Harry Guise; secretary, Victoria Crowhurst; treasurer, Anita Franz.

Reports show the League in a flourishing condition. Starting with six members, the League now numbers thirty-seven, with an average attendance of about twenty-five at meetings.

CANADA.

-The Fall Rally of the Eastern District of the Luther League of Canada will be held in St. Paul's Church, Morrisburg, Ont., the Rev. L. M. McCreery, pastor, on Thanksgiving Day, October 20, 1913, afternoon and evening. THE HYMN THAT HELPED MAKE A GOVERNOR

A youth entered Gustavus Adolphus College with the purpose of taking a brief business course,

The singing of "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" by three hundred voices in the chapel of the College so impressed the young man that he determined to continue his studies and get all the College could give him. That young man is now Governor Eberhart of Minnesota.

[graphic][merged small]

After noting the facts, the editor of one of Minnesota's leading secular newspapers writes: "In the song he found the germ that made him Governor in less than twenty years. Four hundred years had not ended the power of the Luther hymn: it was still potent to make men men."

This hymn and two hundred and forty-nine others with inspiring ring and tuneful harmony, make up the
