Prov. 28. 13.

Violence covereth the mouth of the wicked, Pror.
10. 6. Their violent unjust courses shall bring
down God's jvdgments upon them, whereby thru
shall be so convinced of their former injurious
practices, that thev shall hare nothing to siy foi
themselves, their months shall be stopped.
To cover the feet, Judg. 3. 24. and I Sam, 94.
3. This phrase is commonly understood in both
these places, of easing nature; because the
men not searing oreeches as ve do, but long
coats, they did in that act cover their feet But
others expound it, of composing one's self to take
a little sleep or rest, ns was very usual to do in the
day-time in those hot countries, 2 Sam. 4. 5.
and when they did so in a cool pla^r, they used
to cover their feet, as appears from Hath 3. 7.
And this exposition seems best to agree with the
history in both places where this phrase is found.
For the servants of Ehud staying so long for
their lord, seems to imply, that they judged him
gone to steep, which might take up a consider-
able time, rather than to that other work, which
takes up but a little time. And if Saul was
asleep in the cave, then it is not strange that
he neither heard David and his men talking of
him, nor perceived when David cut off the skirt
of his robe.

CRIMSON.

Some think that it is the same with scarlet; others that it is of a deeper dye. In the Hebrew it is called Tolahat Shani; that is, the double worm, or the worm Shani; as if Shani were the proper name of this worm: In the Arabic it is called, hermes, or Karmes; whence comes the word crimson, because they made use of these little warms to dye this colovr. The Kermes is a small round shell, membraneous, thin, smooth, and shining; of a reddish brv&n colour, mired aith a nhitish ash cvlmtr, about a quarter of an inch diameter, generally divided info two equal entities, the greatest of which is full of a cast number of little oval eggs, very red, or vermillion; and the smaller cavity is full of kind of liquor, which 11 red likewise, and not much different from blood. This cod, or shell, grows vpvn a kind of green oak, that grows only to the height of a shrub. These shrubs are found in Palestine, in Provence, in Languedoc, in Spain. and elsewhere. They loosen these cods, or shells, from the leaves to which they are fastened, and the worms of which they are full come out of the hwle made by taking them from the leaf; they separate these little animals from the shells with a sieve, and put them together by pressing them lightly, and make ihem into balls of the bigness of a pullet's egg.

fectual to mortify and subdue the lusts of the flesh, Gal. 2. 20, I am crucified with Christ. It is said of them, who for some time have made profession of religion, and afterwards turn apostates, that they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, Heb. 6. 6. that is, They shew themselves to be of the same opinion with those that did crucify Christ, and would do it again, were it in their power. The apostle tells the Galatians, that Christ Jesus had been evidently set forth crucified among them, Gal. 3. 1. They had been as fully and clearly informed of the nature and design of Christ's sufferings, as if all had been transacted in their sight.

Is properly taken for a cap of state worn on the heads of sovereign princes, 1 Chron. 20. 2. But in a figurative sense it signifies honour, splendour, or dignity, Lam. 5. 16, The crown is fallen from our head. And the apostle says of the Philippians, that they were his joy and crown, Phil. 4. 1. They were his honour and glory, the great ornament of his ministry, by means whereof they had been converted to Christ. It is used likewise for reward, because conquerors in the public games were crowned, 1 Cor. 9. 25, They do it to obtain a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible: that is, the wrestlers in those games which are practised among you, contend in order to obtain a wreath, or garland of flowers, herbs, or leaves of laurel, olive, and the like; but we Christians strive for an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for us. St. John, speaking of Christ governing the affairs of his church, says, that on his head were many crowns, Rev. 19. 12. noting his absolute sovereignty, and many triumphs. A crown is a sign of victory, Rev. 4. 4.

This penalty was so cvmmen among the Romans, that pains, affictions, troubles, and unprospcrous a fairs were called crosses; and the verb cruciare was used for all sorts of chastisements, and pains of body and mind. To crucify, is not only taken for putting to death on a cross, Mat. 27. 35. but also for the subduing and mortifying sin; for breaking the strength, and suppressing the motions and breakings out, of corrupt nature, Gal. 5. 24.
