This evening a novel kind of entertainment was exhibited by Dr. Kenrick in the Great Room at the Devil Tavern, Temple bar: being an attempt to exhibit the beauties of Shakefpear, both by fpeaking, action, and explanation, in which he is faid to have fucceeded to admiration.

Thursday 20.

This day a petition from Sir Watkin Lewes was prefented to the H. of C. by Brafs Crosby, Efq; complaining of an undue election for the City of Worcester; and charging bribery on the part of the fitting member; the Corporation of Wor cefter as agents therein; and partiality upon the returning officer. The petition

was referred to a Committee to be ballot. ed for on Wednesday, Feb. 9.

This morning a duel was fought near Pancras, by Capt. E-, formerly of Burgoyne's Light-horfe, and a Surgeon in the army; they fired each a cafe of pistols, in the courfe of which the former received a fhot in the arm, and another in the fide, when he fell to the ground, and was directly dreffed by his antagonist, who affifted to place him in a coach, and attended him to his apartments in Bond street, where he lies dangerously ill,

About eleven o'clock this morning, a German came to the chambers of Mr. Cator, Attorney in Lincoln's-inn, under pretence of business; and, after telling a long ftory of his diftreffes, he prevailed on Mr. Cator to give him a fmall fum of money; Mr. Cator being engaged, fignifed that he was going out, and, having no Clerk in his chambers, that he propofed to lock the door after him. While he was turning about to take his hat, the grateful German knocked him down, and afterwards repeated bis blows with fo much violence, that he concluded Mr. Cator was dead, and began to rifle the chambers. While the villain was thus employed, Mr. Cator recovered, and had ftrength enough to rife and open the window before he was perceived, and calling out, foon raifed the Inn, whereby the villain was fecured, though he had got down

tairs, and almoft out of the Inn before he was taken.

Tuesday 25.

Arrived fafe in the river Thames, the fhip Polly, Capt. Ayres, from Philadelphia, with 600 chefts of tea, with which he was chartered by the E. I. Company for that Port, but was not permitted to land the fame, fee p. 32.

Thursday 27.

This day the Commons agreed that 18,024 effective men be employed for Land Forces for 1774; and that 638,6301. be granted for defraying the charge.

That 244,699l. be granted for the of fice of ordnance; and 26,4251. to make good deficiencies in 1773.

That 114.4251. be granted for General and Staff Officers.

That 4,6271. be granted to make good the difference between the British and Irifh Eftablishments.

That 37,5621. be granted for forces in the Plantations, Minoica, Gibraltar, Nova Scotia, &c.

That 6281. be granted for pensions to widows,

That 175,0251. be granted for reduced officers.

That 12,2731. be granted for out-penfioners of Chelsea Hospital.

That rotol. be granted for reduced of ficers, &c. of the two troops of horfe guards. And a bill was thereupon or dered.

Agreed that the malt duty, &c. be continued.

The Sheriffs of London and Middlesex fent an order to John Wilkes, Efq; to attend the House as Member for Middlesex, in confequence of the Speaker's letter, requiring the Sheriffs to give notice to all Members to attend. See the iffue of a like order, Vol. xliii. p. 201.

Monday 31.

The Hon. Mr. Greville, brother to the prefent Earl of Warwick, is elected Member for the borough of Warwick, without opposition.

A dreadful fire lately broke out in the Tower, by which feveral houfes were burnt; and it was with difficulty that it was extinguished before it reached the public offices. Mifs Woodward, at whofe father's houfe the fire broke out, threw herself from the top of the leads, and was fo much bruifed that the foon died in great agonies. Mifs Jennings who accompanied her, was catched on a barrackbed, and tho' much braifed, her arm broke, and feveral parts of her body fcorched by the flames, is likely to recover. Thefe two ladies had reached the ftreet door, and might have efcaped; but being anxious to fave fome valuables, they ran up ftairs, and were pursued by the flames fo fuddenly, that they could

never more return.

Baron Waldeck was stabbed by his Valet-de-Chambre, in his bed, at Munich, the beginning of this month; the murderer was inftantly detected, but afterwards fhot himself, It fince appears, by fome notes found upon him, that he was promised 3000 florins for that heinous ac
