Nachdem das bekannte praktische buch Skeat's eine reihe von auflagen erlebt hatte, die es trotz beständiger verbesserungen und zusätze doch im grossen und ganzen unverändert liessen, liegt nunmehr eine vollständige neubearbeitung vor. Für diese hat der verfasser von allen den zahlreichen und bedeutenden werken gebrauch gemacht, die in den letzten beiden jahrzehnten auf dem gebiet der englischen etymologie und lexikographie erschienen sind, vor allem von dem New English Dictionary. Daneben haben seine eignen forschungen ihren fortgang genommen und so bietet der verdiente gelehrte uns hier nicht nur ein neues, sondern auch verbessertes buch, in dem wohl kein artikel unverändert geblieben ist. Zahlreiche mängel und irrtümer sind darin beseitigt und vielen artikeln dürfte jetzt wohl die endgiltige fassung gegeben sein. Mayhew und Chadwick haben dem verfasser bei der umarbeitung und drucklegung wertvolle hülfe geleistet.

Aber auch in anderer beziehung weist das wörterbuch eine erfreuliche neuerung auf: während früher bei der eigentümlichen anordnung der leser durch beständige verweise auf ursprünglichere formen zu endlosem und zeitraubendem blättern

gezwungen war musste man doch z. b. monkey unter madam, mass unter missile suchen ist jetzt streng alphabetische wortfolge eingeführt worden, was die benutzung ungemein erleichtert. Natürlich sind alle früheren nachträge (mit ausnahme einiger neu hinzugekommener) jetzt auch an gehöriger stelle eingefügt. Im anhang ist die List of Aryan Roots durch eine praktischere Select List of Latin and Greek Words ersetzt worden, die alle englischen ableitungen jeder vokabel verzeichnet, z. b. unter centum folgende: cent, centenary, centennial, centesimal, centigrade, centipede, centuple, centurion, century, quintal, unter xάorn: card, carte, cartel, cartoon, cartouche, cartridge, cartulary, chart, charter, écarté. Ich glaube, dass diese mühsame arbeit von allen benutzern des buches dankbar begrüsst werden wird, da sie ja auch einen praktischen zweck, die erwerbung eines systematischen englischen wortschatzes, dem studierenden ungemein erleichtert!

Freilich darf ich nicht verhehlen, dass das buch trotz aller verbesserungen und umarbeitungen doch noch allerlei mängel besitzt, die seinen wert beeinträchtigen. M. Förster hat diese bereits in seiner inhaltreichen anzeige in Herrigs Archiv CVIII, 188 ff. besprochen, sodass ich mir ein nochmaliges eingehen darauf ersparen möchte. 1) Aber trotzdem kann ich Skeat's Concise Dictionary als das beste und billigste hilfsmittel seiner art den englischen philologen, studierenden wie lehrern, nur aufs wärmste empfehlen. Den dank und die anerkennung aber, die referent dem verfasser schuldig ist, glaubt er nicht besser bethätigen zu können, als indem er auf einige beim gebrauche und durchlesen gefundene irrtümer hinweist, in der festen überzeugung, dass der unermüdliche verfasser, getreu dem motto, das er auf den titel des buches gesetzt hat:

'Were man to live co-eval with the sun,
The patriarch-pupil would be learning still,'

(Young, Night Thoughts, VII 86.) in jeder neuen auflage das treffliche buch immer mehr vervollkommnen werde. Da Förster a. a. o. besonders auf die mit
