The Names of ther, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, are all exprefly mentionWe cannot therefore think that St. Peter here intended to exclude ather and the Holy Ghost. And though they are not here particulardown, those who were baptized might notwithstanding be bapin their Name, as well as in the Name of Jefus Christ. For it is cerhat from the Apostles Times the Names of all the three were used. Lightfoot's Account of this Matter is to this effe&t: That among ews, the Apostles baptized in the Name of Jefus Chrift only, becaufe already believed in the Father and the Holy Ghost, who fpake by the ets; for the Point controverted among them was, whether Jesus was the Son of God, and the true Meffiah, which those who were zed by the Apoftles profeffed to believe. But among the Gentiles leathens, they baptized in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and e Holy Ghoft; by which they were inftructed in the Knowledge of true God, of whom before they were ignorant. The Name only of Lord Jesus and of the Lord, is mentioned A&ts 8. 16. A&s 10. 48. 19. 5.

or they may be tranflated in the House; that is, the Place where they were wont to meet together to perform their publick Worship as Chriftians. The Learned think that this Place, Ats 1. 13. is called the upper Room. Dr. Cave, in his primitive Christianity, tells us, that by a very antient Tra dition, this is fuppofed to be the Room where our Saviour, the Night before his Death, celebrated the Paffover. In this Place probably they were affembled when the Holy Ghost came down upon them, As 2.1.So that the Senfe of this Verfe feems to be, that having performed their Devotions in the Temple at the accustomed Hours of Prayer, they used to return home to this upper Room, there to celebrate the holy Eucharift, and then go to their ordinary Meals. (1) We cannot from hence conclude that there is any determinate Number of Perfons appointed to Salvation, and that the refidue, which are the much greater Part of Mankind, are, by a peremptory Decree of God's, appointed to everlasting Destruction; for the plain Import of thefe Words is this, That thofe, who by the Preaching of the Apoftles, were perfwaded that Jefus is the Chrift, and accepted of the Salvation purchased by him, on the gracious and reasonable Conditions it was offered to them, were added to the Church, being by Baptism admitted into it, Which Conditions are, Faith, Repentance, and fincere Obedience to the Laws of Chrift, the Performance of which are promifed and vowed in Baptifm. The ftri&t rendring of thefe Words is, The Lord added to the Church daily the faved.
