NOTTINGHAM.

immediately proceeded, with deference and sweet reasonableness, to put the real situation before Mr. Squire; he was followed by Mr. Gurner Jones, Mr. J. D. Stewart, and the Chairman of the Stoke Newington Books Committee, and in the course of their remarks it quickly became evident that the methods of book selection prevailing in public libraries were much more advanced than those advocated by Mr. Squire, who at once perceived that he had wholly underestimated the knowledge and calibre of his audience. His reply to the discussion revealed his excellent good nature, his modesty and his genius; very adroitly he turned all the criticism to good account, and finished up by saying he had thoroughly enjoyed the meeting and the experience it had provided. As had been mentioned in the vote of thanks, he was sailing for America at the end of the week on a lecturing tour, and he felt that his audience of that evening had made a good "sparringpartner" in preparation for any audience he might meet on the other side. To the Editor.

DEAR SIR,

CORRESPONDENCE.

PUBLICITY POSTERS.

I wish to express my appreciation for your notice of the "Publicity Posters," which you are good enough to commend for adoption by British libraries. Although these have been devised by me, I wish it to be quite clear that I have no financial interest in the same. I may say that I was anxious to get my ideas put into practice, and Mr. Woolston, of the Woolston Book Co., Nottingham, undertook the risk of production of a series of ten posters. In a circular advertising these, the following statement is made-which those who have not seen the circular are naturally unaware of :

"The Publishers desire to state that Mr. Briscoe's services in the preparation of these Posters are honorary, and are given with the object of advancing the Public Library Movement in every way possible-believing that publicity is necessary if the movement is to move forward."

This series is designed to create interest in the Public Library Movement generally; to call attention to the facilities afforded at the local Public Library; to direct notice to special departments of the Public Libraries, etc. These posters carry out to some extent various ideas introduced in my little book on " Library Advertising, and I wish to thank the Woolston Book Co. for their interest and assistance. The fact that, in addition to many orders in Britain, the firm has received requests from America and Canada is some justification for their enterprise.

Public Libraries, Nottingham.

Yours for publicity,

WALTER A. BRISCOE.
