TRADE TESTS

The Scientific Measurement of Trade Proficiency. By J. CROSBY CHAPMAN, D.Sc., Ph.D. With many Diagrams and Illustrations. Demy 8vo, 450 pages, 15s. net. Works managers and employers will not be slow to appreciate the value of this instrument in dealing with the personnel of industry. The variety of tests which are fully explained and illustrated in this book measure with an astonishing degree of accuracy, not the mental adaptability of the subject, or his probable suitability for any particular trade, but the specific skill which he possesses as a result of actual experience in the trade; and they are therefore of immediate practical value in eliminating the incompetent and in classifying the various grades of efficiency. With such tests at his disposal and it is important to note that trade knowledge is not required by the examiner the employer may enter upon the selection of his staff with confidence that he will not be bluffed, and assured of the fact that he is equipped to test actual skill with greater certainty than ever."-Business Organisation.

gelantinous substance strewed on the floor in front of the recondite classes in an open-access library, upon which the reader hurrying to get fiction, gets stuck and is forced to remain perusing these classes. It is both useful and entertaining; (b) Best-books gramophone, which is placed in the entrance of the library and emits with musical accompaniment quotations from recent reviews of books on such subjects as Einstein, International Currency, etc. We would add others, but our inspiration expired in the coal strike.

Answer to a question on book-production set at a recent examination:

[ocr errors]

A very careless habit of some publishers is to put the dates of books behind the title-pages instead of on the front of them. This occasions the extravagant waste of labour involved in making the cataloguer go beyond the face of the title-page in cataloguing a book; and so occasions indelicate tremors in conscientious cataloguers."

This is an absolute verity. Quis publisheros wallopiet?

APOLOGY.

We admit that our inspiration for these recondite notes comes from the July L.A. Record, wherefrom we have gained much delectation of late. The reader must excuse the frequent repetition of our initials; but we must make them known somehow. We propose to continue each month so long as the Current Viewer in the Record continues to furnish our inspiration.

SPENCE, LEWIS. An Introduction to Mythology.
G.G. Harrap & Co., Ltd., 1921. 12s. 6d. net.

B.F.

8vo, pp. 334.

Mr. Lewis Spence's work on "Myths of Mexico and Peru" and his "Dictionary of Mythology are so well-known that this volume follows almost as a matter of course, and will be equally welcome. The author concerns himself with the science of mythology, that is, with religious beliefs and conjectures as to the nature of things of primitive, ancient, or barbarous peoples, and not with modern religious science, philosophy, or theology.

In his section on the progress of mythic science, Mr. Spence discusses the work of many of the great writers who have given the results of their research to the world. His section on the various classes of myth is useful and illuminating, dealing as it does with such questions as Fire-Stealing Myths, Star Myths, Birth of Gods Myths, and many others. The final section of the work, the Great Mythic Systems, is not by any means the least valuable in this comprehensive volume.

HEARN, LAFCADIO. Karma, and other Stories and Essays. 8vo, pp. 205. G. G. Harrap & Co., Ltd., 1921. 5s. net. These charming stories and essays now appear in book form for the first time. The sketch which gives the title to the volume is a most delicate and poetic love-story with just the tragic note which the author knows so well how to introduce effectively China and the Western World," and First Muezzin" are both excellent articles in their way, and the stories which complete the work, such as The Boy who drew Cats," The Goblin-Spider,' and Chin-Chin Kobakama," are both subtle and fantastic, ranking with the author's best examples of imaginative literature.

REPORTS.

Gateshead (County Borough). Thirty-fifth Annual Report of the General Management Committee of the Public Library,

1920-1921.

Librarian and Secretary: R. LILLIE. Income and Expenditure : No return shown. Stock Lending, 23,271; reference, 3,762.

Issues: 137,879.

Right at the beginning of this report our eyes fall upon a sentence that arouses our interest" No greater justification for the maintenance of Public Libraries out of public funds is needed than the fact that in times of depression and unemployment all the rooms are filled with readers, and the issue of bocks shows remarkable increases." The recent strike conditions have proved this fact to be a true one, yet so far as we can remember, no one has hinted at the significance of the increased use of libraries in times of depression. A Banburyite might say that the rooms were filled merely with the willingly and the unwillingly idle who came for the want of something better to do. The Banburyite would be wrong. There is a great deal more in the phenomenon than that. Only one thought that occurs to us is that this increase in home reading shows that the masses are learning how to utilise to the best advantage even their enforced and undesired leisure. We know of many men, in one town alone, who during the strike, and with the help of the public library, has been able to return to work with much greater qualifications for the task than they possessed on March 30th, and others to whom, through their selecting a different type of reading, the strike has been the means of broadening their outlook. No greater justification is needed.

KILBURN PUBLIC LIBRARY (Urban District of Willesden). Librarian's Annual Report, 1920-1921.

Now that the co-ordination of the libraries in the Willesden District is a fait accompli, this is the last annual report to be issued by the separate institution at Kilburn. Therefore, as the figures given deal with work done under an old regime, we will not discuss them, reviewing this report only for the sake of the opportunity it presents to acknowledge the fact that the work of the no longer separate libraries has always been as excellent as the system would permit. Though we welcome the change, it is not because those responsible for the previous management of these libraries did not perform their task in a thoroughly efficient manner. We should like also to express our appreciation of the attitude of the Kilburn Committee and Librarian towards the new conditions:-" Now under the new scheine we shall take a broader and wider view, and look forward to taking our place as an integral part in the Library system of the great Urban District of Willesden (George Gooding, Librarian). That is the

right spirit. Good luck.

BULLETINS.

A recent issue of the most voluminous library bulletin in existence--that of the Boston (U.S.) Public Library includes an account of the special collections with which that library is blessed. It is an imposing list, as there are over twenty such collections, all of them very extensive and valuable. It is proposed to give a full account of the resources of and scope of each in future issues. Some of the most striking of these special libraries are the Allen A. Brown Collection of Books relating to the Stage (5,106 vols.) and Music Library (15,153 vols.). The Barton Library, one of the largest collections of Shakespeariana in the world, the Benton Collection of Editions of the Book of Common Prayer, and books printed by Baskerville, and others containing books on landscape architecture, Browning, women, the West Indies, of New England books, rare books, first editions and privately printed books, and collections of maps and prints.
