Página 137 - Insuperable height of loftiest shade, Cedar, and pine, and fir, and branching palm, A sylvan scene; and as the ranks ascend Shade above shade, a woody theatre Of stateliest view.
Página 142 - Smooth to the shelving brink a copious flood Rolls fair, and placid ; where collected all, In one impetuous torrent, down the steep It thundering shoots and shakes the country round. At first an azure sheet, it rushes broad ; Then whitening by degrees, as prone it falls, And from the loud-resounding rocks below Dash'd in a cloud of foam, it sends aloft A hoary mist, and forms a ceaseless shower.

And rocks, and mountain-tops, that long retain'd Th' ascending gleam, are all one swimming scene, Uncertain if beheld. Sudden to heaven Thence weary vision turns ; where, leading soft The silent hours of love, with purest ray Sweet Venus shines ; and from her genial rise, When day-light sickens till it springs afresh, Unrival'd reigns, the fairest lamp of Night....

It is wonderful how in such precipitate rapidity of the fingers, the musical proportions are preserved, and, by their art, faultless throughout.

And stole upon the air, that even Silence Was took ere she was ware, and wished she might Deny her nature, and be never more Still to be so displaced. I was all ear, !(« And took in strains that might create a soul Under the ribs of Death.

Página 168 - Within a long recess there lies a bay : An island shades it from the rolling sea, And forms a port secure for ships to ride : Broke by the jutting land on either side, In double streams the briny waters glide, Betwixt two rows of rocks : a sylvan scene Appears above, and groves for ever green : A grot is form'd beneath, with mossy seats, To rest the Nereids, and exclude the heats.
Página 122 - In silent search ; or through the forest, rank With what the dull incurious weeds account, Bursts his blind way ; or climbs the mountain-rock, Fired by the nodding verdure of its brow. With such a liberal hand has nature flung Their seeds abroad, blown them about in winds : Innumerous mix'd them with the nursing mould, The moistening current, and prolific rain.
