If the result is more than 12 hours from noon, the time will be the next day in the morning, and if more than 12 hours from midnight, the time will be in the after, noon of the same day. When the shadow.cast by the Sun reaches the noon-mark, set the clock at the time given in calendar pages of this Almanac, in the column of " Sun at Noon-mark," and it will be exactly right. If a meridian line is used instead of a noon-mark, the passing the lines by the Sun's center is the moment for setting the clock. Any skillful surveyor can make a noon-mark or meridian lines of small brass or copper wires. In doing so, he must allow for the variation of the magnetic needle from a true or astronomical north and south line.

A Table of Sixty-one Bright Stars. To ascertain when any Star found in the following Table will be on the upper meridian, add the numbers opposite in the left-hand column of figures to the time of Sidereal Noon found in the calendar pages. For the RISING of a star, subtract the number opposite in the right-hand column of figures from its meridian passage. For the setting of a star, add the same number to its meridian passage. Those marked (....) revolve in a circle of perpetual apparition, and do not rise nor set north of the latitude of New York (40° 42 40''), for which latitude the semi-diurnal arcs are calculated. The civil day begins at midnight, and consequently 24 hours after midnight, or 12 hours from noon, is morning of the succeeding day; and more than 24 hours from noon, is erening of the next day. From 12h. to 24h. from midnight, or from Oh. to 12h, from noon, will be in the afternoon of the same day. This table is arranged in the order of culmination.

Surveyors and Civil Engineers may obtain the declination of the magnetic needle by observations on the Pole Star when upon the meridian, or when at the greatest elongation east or west. POLARIS and other stars pass the lower meridian 11h. 58m, after their upper transit. To the time of upper transit of Polaris, add 5h. 54m. and it gives the time of greatest western elongation. If the 5h. 54m. be subtracted from the time of upper transit, it will give the time of greatest eastern elongation. Observations made at the time of greatest elongation are less liable to error than those made at the time of transit. The mean distance of Polaris from the pole this year is 1° 22' 23.37". To find its azimuth for any latitude, take from 18.3795564 the logarithmic cosine of the latitude, and the remainder is the logarithmic sine of the azimuth.

NOTE.-In the table above it is to be understood that the word “ near” and the character $ (conjunction) are synonymous, and mean that the two bodies are neurest each other at the time expressed, and that they are then on a line running from the North Pole through both bodies, and have the same right ascension. GR. ELON, means greatest elongation or greatest apparent angular distance from the Sun. STATIONARY means that the planet is then without apparent motion east or west with respect to the Stars, and is about to move in a direction contrary to that it last had. The character 8 indicates that the planet is opposite the Sun, or 180 deg., or a half circle east of it, and rises when the Sun sets, and sets when he rises. When a planet is a quarter of a circle or 90 deg. from the Sun, east or west, it is known by 0.

PLANETARY CHARACTERS.- $ Mercury, & Venus, ở Mars, 2 Jupiter, 3 Saturn, Uranus, i Neptune, Moon. The above table enables us to find the planets throughout the year.

To Ascertain the Length of the Day and Night, at any time of the year, add 12 hours to the time of the Sun's setting, and from the sum subtract the time of rising, for the length of the day. Subtract the time of setting from 12 hours, and to the remainder add the time of rising next morning, for the length of the night. These rules are equally true for apparent time.

Leap-Year.-Every year the number of which is divisible by 4 without a remainder is a le rear, except the last year the century, which is a leap-year only when divisible by 100 without a remainder. Thus the year 1900 will not be a leap-year.

The Asteroids, About 114 little planets, called Asteroids, have been discovered between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter: Some of them are so small that to call them worlds might seem inappropriate. But any body baving an orbit, though not larger than a cannon-ball, is entitled to rank as a world. Many such may exist which will never be discovered because of their littleness. Very little asteroidal bodies are revolving around the earth, as the moon does. The acrolites, or falling stones, are really such asteroids whose orbits cross the earth's orbit, or else wind spirally inward to the earth as a center.

Moon.—Lowest, 6th; perigee, 7th; apogee and highest, 19th. Books and Periodicals devoted to specialties are numerous, yet but few journals give a variety of pure, interesting and instructive reading adapted to the various members of the Family Circle, in both Town and Country. But MOORE'S RURAL NEW YORKER, the great National Illustrated Rural and Family Weekly, is a notable exception, for, by meeting the wants of Men, Women, and Children, it has become the Favorite Farm and Fireside Journal of America.

The Rural New-Yorker is not only the Standard Authority on Agriculture, Horticulture, &c., but highly esteemed as a Literary and Family Paper. It carefully treats upon more subjects than are discussed in half a dozen ordinary journals, is finely illustrated, and by far the Largest, Best and Cheapest Journal of its Class, in tho World. Indeed as one of its contemoraries says, “ MOORE'S KURAL is the most elegantly printed, ably edited, widely circulatod, and heartily welcomed paper, as a whole, which now finds its way among the people."

The Rral N: w-Yorker contains 16 double quarto pages, weekly, with title-page, index, etc., every six nionths, making Two Large and Handsomo Volumes a Year. It is first ciass, wide awake, progressive, and alway, up to the times-manifesting the true spirit ofits inspiriting Motto, “Excel ior," and Laudable Objects, "Progress and improvement."
