PRIZE COMPETITIONS.

The Translation Prize for August is awarded to "Bonhomme." The winner of the Translation Prize for July is C. L. Ford, Esq., 3 Sydney Buildings, Bath.

and not with the passions of individuals; breathing the maxims of the world, and not the tenets of the schools; one and uniform in its air and spirit, whether touched by the stern and haughty Sallust, by the open and discursive Livy, by the reserved and thoughtful Tacitus.

By "BONHOMME."

Greek-the shrine of the genius of the old world; as universal as our race, as individual as ourselves; of infinite inflexibility, of indefatigable strength, with the complication and the distinctness of Nature herself, to which nothing was vulgar, from which nothing was excluded; speaking to the ear like Italian, speaking to the mind like English; with words like pictures, with words like the gossamer film of the summer; at once the variety and the picturesqueness of Homer, the gloom and the intensity of Eschylus; not compressed to the closest by Thucydides, not fathomed to the bottom by Plato, not sounding with all its thunders, nor lit up with all its ardours even under the Promethean touch of Demosthenes! And Latin-the voice of empire and of war, of law and of the State; inferior to its half-parent and rival in the embodying of passion, and in the distinguishing of thought, but equal to it in sustaining the measured march of history, and superior to it in the indignant declamation of moral satire; stamped with the mark of an imperial and despotizing republic; rigid in its construction, parsimonious in its synonymes; reluctantly yielding to the flowery yoke of Horace, although opening glimpses of Greek-like splendour in the occasional inspirations of Lucretius; proved, indeed, to the uttermost by Cicero, and by him found wanting; yet majestic in its bareness, impressive in its concise- | Jules S. ness: the true language of history, instinct with the spirit of nations,

The fine passage set last month for translation into French prose is taken from a work by Nelson Coleridge on “ Homer and the Greek Epic.” Several have queried "inflexibility" in the second line, but, if it be a misprint, it is in the original, and I incline to think that the author is using the word in the unusual sense of "richness of inflections," in which case it may be sufficiently rendered by flexibilité.

"Not com

Le grec is more forcible than la langue grecque: “the shrine" rather temple or autel than chasse, in any case without the article, being in apposition. Universel que nous même is a rendering which combines three common blunders. "Distinction" is not distinction "eminence," but précision, netteté, or better still les nuances, "the fine shades of difference." Exclus for exclu was a common slip, and the perpetrator of pour qui rien était banal must discover for himself why he was gulfed in the fifth class. Les mots comme des tableaux (images) would sound grotesque to a Frenchman, and les fils de la Vierge suits the ornate style better than les nuages flandreux. "At once is not en même temps, which would refer to the preceding clause, but à la fois. pressed to the closest by Thucydides" is excellently turned in the prize version, but it might be more literally rendered-langue dont Thucydide ne comprenait pas toute la concision, or pas comprimée au plus étroit par Thucydide. For "half-parent" the ambiguous parent or aïeul will suffice (we have not to correct Coleridge's philology). bodying of passion" is hardly expressed by par la propriété de la passion"; en donnant un corps à la passion, of “La Main Rouge," is better; donner l'impression might also serve. Les inspirations orasionnel es is terribly dog French. "Glimpses" is best turned by using laissant entrevoir for “opening." Des aperçus of the prize version would naturally be construed of Lucretius himself rather than of the readers of Lucretius. 'Language of history," langage, not langue,

which is never used in the secondary sense of “idiom." For les aphorismes des écoles read les doctrines (dogmes) scolastiques, for seul et uniforme, un et unifor me, and for penseur circonspect read penseur recueilli. These pairs of epithets, all preceding their substantives, are in French inelegant, and should be dealt with as in the prize version. Lastly, I may call attention to the prevailing use of preterites definite where imperfects were required.

But for a slip in spelling (scholastique), “La Main Rouge” would have been bracketed with "Bonhomme."

HOLIDAY COMPETITIONS.

Extra prizes to the amount of not less than five guineas are offered for the following subjects. Every composition which, in the judgment of the Prize Editor, shows distinguished merit will be awarded a prize of half a guinea.

1. An imitation of one of Bacon's Essays.

2. A parody of a modern English poet.

3. A plot for a novel of school or college life. 4. An arithmetical puzzle.

5. An epitaph on the late Education Bill.

Initials or a nom de guerre must be adopted by ALL com petitors, but the prize-winners will be required to send real name for publication.

N.B.-The latest date for receiving Holiday Compositions is September 10.

The Record o, Te hnical and Secondary Education publishes an elaborate comparative summary of the recent progress made in sixteen county-boroughs in England, viz., Bath, Birmingham, Bolton, Bootle, Brighton, Bury, Coventry, Liverpool, Manchester, Norwich, Oldham, Portsmouth, Rochdale, St. Helens, Stockport, and Wigan. AUF VERLORNEM POSTEN, AND NAZZARENA DANTI. By JOHANNES V. DEWALL. 35.

"The two stories by Johannes v. Dewall are well suited for their purpose; the style and diction are not too difficult for those whose acquaintance with German is not extensive, and ample explanatory annotation is provided."—Saturday Review. CONTES MILITAIRES. By A. DAUDET.

2s. 6d.

"Written at fever heat immediately after the great 1870 war, they show Daudet's power in many ways at its highest. . . . We therefore do more than recommend-we urge-all readers of French to get the stories in some form, and the present one is both good and cheap. The paper is excellent, and the type clear and bold... A neat map of Paris will assist the reader in following the movement of the stories."-The Schoolmaster.
