Carols. A Manuscript Collection of the Words of Nineteen Christmas Carols, collected, circa 1728, chiefly from the West of England. Small 4to, loosely held by old parchment boards. £3/17/6,

pen,

The first seventeen are all in one handwriting. Inside cover is the inscription," John Beal, his book, hand and 1723: Christmas Carols to be sung in the Christmas holy days." Then comes the autograph of “Jane Penneck Robinson, 1763," then of " William Hill, 1800," and either might have written the last two carols.

No tunes are given, but MSS. collections are of exSome Ancient ceeding rarity. In Davies Gilbert's scarce Christmas Carols formerly sung in the West of England," second edition, privately printed, 1823, will be found the tunes of nine of the nineteen carols here given, but in most instances the text is here far longer and the variations of reading are very curious.

As a collection actually made 1728-50 this MS. is unique and authoritative, and possesses a claim to completeness in the carols given not to be matched elsewhere.
