REMARKS ON THE SECOND CHAPTER OF EXODUS.

"THERE arose not a prophet since in Israel, like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, in all the signs and the wonders which the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land, and in all that mighty hand, and in all the great terror which Moses shewed in the sight of all Israel."

We here enter upon the history of this remarkable person. We have the account of his birth, his adoption by Pharaoh's daughter, his leaving her to join his countrymen, his acting as judge, flying from Egypt, and his marriage.

V. 1-4. You remember the charge of the king of Egypt to all his people, which we read of in the last chapter?"Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river:"-so that the sons of this oppressed people came into the world under sentence of death; and that, not for any fault in themselves or their parents, but to prevent the nation from increasing so fast. This child, however, was hid by his mother three months. How could she venture to preserve him, after all the proofs Pharaoh had given of his cruel disposition, and his determination No. 1.-VOL.
