139 HERRICK (Robert).-HESPERIDES OR THE WORKS BOTH HUMANB AND DIVINE. . . . London, Printed for John Williams and Francis Eglesfield, and are to be sold at the Crown and Marygold in Saint Pauls Church-yard, 1648-47. FIRST EDITION, the 2 parts in one vol, 8vo, WITH BRILLIANT IMPRESSION OF THE ENGRAVED FRONTISPIECE, WITH PORTRAIT BY WILLIAM MARSHALL (early owners' names on back), a few paginations very slightly cut into, BUT A FINE LARGE COPY (61 by 4 inches), contemporary calf, gold fillet on sides with a flower ornament at each corner and ornamental centre-piece, g.e., rebacked, £300

* EXCESSIVELY RARE AND A VERY INTERESTING PRESENTATION COPY, having been given by John Williams, Bookseller, of London, whose name is in the imprint, to his friend, Richard Hoare, with a five-line Latin inscription to that effect on the first fly-leaf, dated 1647, the date of the publication of the second part, "Noble Numbers." The names of other early owners occur on the fly-leaves, one on the blank verso of the last leaf. The difficulty of obtaining a perfect copy of Herrick at all has increased very much in recent years, and even then the portrait is almost always cut close. In the present copy it has a good margin. Mr. E. M. Cox writes: "If one might venture a bibliographical prophecy, it would be that Herrick's Hesperides' is a book which, in its first edition, will steadily gain interest and importance to the collector in the field of English literature to an extent which a very few years ago would have seemed impossible."

The original edition of this rare didactic poem in nine books, with prose annotations. Dedicated to Charles I. and his Queen. The Author was the famous actor and dramatist and a contemporary of Shakespeare. In the fourth book is the interesting notice of XVIIth century English poets, including Melliflous Shakespeare, whose enchanting quill, commanded Mirth or Passion, was but Will." The last two books contain some remarkable Ghost Stories and Tales of Witches, among them Heywood's version of Macbeth, which, though taken from the same source as Shakespeare's Play, has curious variations, and represents Macbeth as slain by Malcolme, Duncan's son, and not by Macduff.

He was sent to Gloucester for execution, and was burned at the stake there on 9 Feb., 1554-5. By his actions and writings he very effectively contributed to the popularising of extreme puritanic views of religion in England. Collation: A to O 4 in eights, o 4 a blank leaf.

*Charles Lamb says, Heywood is a prose Shakespeare, his scenes are to the full as natural and effective.' He is first mentioned in Henslowe's diary, and was regularly engaged by Henslowe as a member of his, the Lord Admiral's company. He was also for a time, one of the theatrical retainers of Henry Wriothesley, third Earl of Southampton. This work is the old fabulous history of Britain, continued down to the death of James I., the prophecies of Merlin (in verse), being recounted and interpreted along with the events which were supposed to realise them.
