77 DANTE. QUI COMINCIA LA VITA E COSTUMI DELLO EXCELLENTE POETA VULGARI (sic) DANTE ALIGHIERI DI FIRENZE HONORE E GLORIA DEL IDIOMA FIORENTINO [La Divina Comedia, col Commento di Jacopo della Lana, comunemente attribuito a Benvenuto (Rambaldi) da Imola, correto da Christofal Berardi, con la vita del poeta per Giovani Bocchacio]. Venetiis, Vendelin de Spiera, 1477. Thk. sm. folio, gothic letter, double columns, wants I leaf in the Vita and the 2 blank leaves al and PP12, many upper margins of the first half repaired, and a number of words in facsimile, last leaf of text cut round and mounted, and a rust-hole in it injuring 3 letters, and a few small worm-holes in the last 3 leaves, otherwise a good copy (11 by 7 inches), brown morocco, antique style, g. e., rebacked, £85

*The very rare fifth edition of Dante and the earliest that any Dante collector can hope to possess. It is also the finest of the original editions, and is a noble example of Vendelin de Spiera's famous press. He and his brother John were the first Venetian printers, and Vendelin printed by himself in Venice from 1470 to 1477. The work ends with a colophon in verse, giving the name of commentator, editor, printer, and date. The colophon ascribes the commentary to Benvenuto da Imola, but all Italian scholars are now agreed that it should be ascribed to Jacopo della Lana. The Life by Boccaccio is often wanting.

Sm. 4to., text in black letter, with 11 pages of engraved genealogical tables in Latin containing numerous small shields and 3 large shields of the arms and quarterings of Devereux, Ferrers and Bouchier, including one, on reverse of title, within the garter, with 55 quarterings, THE WHOLE OF THE ARMS BEAUTIFULLY PAINTED BY A FIRST-RATE CONTEMPORARY HERALDIC ARTIST, several of the stems and the top of one shield in the genealogical tables just shaved, BUT A VERY FINE COPY, morocco, £75

* EXCESSIVELY RARE. No copy has turned up for sale since 1824, except a damaged copy in the second portion of the theological section of the Britwell Court Library sold en bloc in Jan., 1921. No other copy is known with the arms emblazoned, and the beauty of the heraldic work in this copy shows that it was a very special one, probably that belonging to Robert Devereux, second Earl of Essex, the ill-fated favourite of Queen Elizabeth, who was beheaded in 1601, for whose benefit it was printed and to whom it is dedicated. Among the complimentary verses in various languages before the sermon itself, which begins on D4, is a long poem (3 pages) in Welsh signed H. Llyn. Collation: Title, &c., 4 leaves; A to F2 in fours. From the Woolaton Hall Library.

*Lee, No. 74. A severe political satire in verse on the late House of Commons and the Ministry. The Author signs himself at the end of the preface, Anglipoloski of Lithuania," and the names of persons are throughout the poem obscured under Polish forms and terminations, but the characters are easily distinguishable. Lords Halifax, Russell, and Somers are warmly praised; while he censures with much asperity Lords Nottingham, Rochester, Seymour, and other eminent Tories. Harley and Godolphin are extolled for their ability and integrity.

* Extremely rare. Sir A. W. Ward writes, "Dekker has treated with powerful simplicity he most terrible of the sins of a great city, and although I am by no means inclined to assign to the Honest Whore, from a literary point of view, the highest eminence among his dramatic works, the depth of its general conception and the broadaffectiveness of its execution have justly caused this to be regarded as one of the most interesting productions of the popular Elizabethan drama." Contains allusions to Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors, As You Like It, and Othello.

Clarkson Stanfield, R.A., was one of Dickens' most intimate friends, and to him Little Dorrit was dedicated. Four of the "Christmas Books," viz., The Battle of Life,' The Chimes," The Cricket on the Hearth," and The Haunted Man," were partly illustrated by him. It would be difficult to find a more fascinating presentation copy than the above.

89 DURANDUS (Gulielmus, Bishop of Mende) RACIONALE DIVINORUM OFFICIUM, sine nota, sed Basilea, M Wenszler, before 1480 (?). Folio, gothic letter, double columns, 60 lines to a full column, with the first blank leaf, rubricated throughout, initials supplied by hand in red and blue, several at the end with ornamental flourishes, and one with ornamental penwork, MS. marginal annotations, two tears mended, FINE COPY, old vellum, back gone, with tie-strings, £22

* A VERY RARE EDITION of this celebrated work, which has long remained the standard authority on the history of the Roman Church discipline, and the origin and meaning of the various forms of the ritual. It was one of the first books to come from the printing press, the original edition having been issued by Fust and Schoeffer in 1459. The present edition is a splendid exemple of Gothic typography from one of the earliest Basel presses, most probably that of Michael Wensler, though the type does not quite agree with that in any of his signed productions. A contemporary MS. index has been added

at the end.
