Hungering as Symbolic Language: What are We Saying when We Starve Ourselves?

This book is a study of hunger and hungry persons as a new form of cultural and emotional intensity, posing the subject from an unusual perspective: hunger as affect. Voluntary starvation can cause illness but also contains a positive, almost heroic dimension of renunciation and self-control through which the person is exalted as a human being.
