in these words, * that which thou foweft is not quicken'd except it die, where the very fame Individual grain is faid to be Quicken'd which Dies, we are taught, that the very fame Humane Body which Dies fhall be Quicken'd in the Refurrection; fo that the Context is to be Interpreted confiftently with these words: And therefore he condemns that very Mifapplication of the Text, which is now mention'd, as Foreign to the intention of the Example.

And indeed the Oppofition between the Body own, and that which shall be, is so stated, that it does not give us the leaft reafon to fufpect, that the Body which fhall be Raifed will not be the Same that Dies: Thou foweft not that body that fhall be, but bare grain: where the Body that shall be, is not opposed to that which is fown, confider'd Abfolutely, but in this respect, that it is fown Bare grain, whereas it does not spring up Bare grain, but Improv'd and Adorn'd. In like manner fhall our Bodies be Raised

again, not only restored to life; but with the addition of New and Noble Qualities, Incorruptibility and Immortality.

But 'tis obfervable, that though St. Paul's defign in this Allufion was to point out the Different Qualities of the Dead and Raised body, yet his application of it is fo expreffed as to be a full proof, that the Same body fhall rife. *It is fown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption; It is fown in difhonour, it is raised in glory: 'Tis the very fame thing, that is the fubject of Different Qualities from what it had before. And this is ftill more evident from what is further afferted, This + corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality; by which nothing can be understood, but that the Same body, which is Corruptible and Mortal now, shall hereafter be clothed with Incorruptibility and Immortality: And therefore the Apostle adds, that when this shall be done, then shall be brought to pass the Saying that is written, Death is fwal

lowed up in victory; not only upon this account, that it fhall afterwards make no fresh conquefts, but, as * Iræneus

obferves from the text, then will Death be truly conquer'd, when that flesh which is holden of it, will be deliver'd from its Dominion, and Reftored to life, which fhall be Immortal.

And hence may be answer'd a notion,. that is advanced, by the Author fo often taken notice of, grounded upon a Criticism, which he lays great ftress upon, and therefore mentions more than once, as a very confiderable Discovery: For speaking of this 15th. ch. of the 1ft. Ep. to the Corinth. he obferves, that vengoì, Tavτες, οἳ are the nominative cafes to ἐγείρονται, ζωοποιηθήσονται, ἐγερθήσονται, all along, and not owμara, Bodies, which one may with reafon think would fomewhere or other have been expreffed, if all this had been faid, to propofe it as an Article of Faith, that the very fame bodies fhall be raised. The fame manner of Speaking the Spirit of God obferves all through the

new Teftament, where 'tis faid, raise the dead, quicken or make alive the dead, the refurrection of the dead.

This Critical observation is liable to two exceptions; firft that 'tis False, and in the next place, that though it were True, it would be no reason of Doubting whether it be an Article of Faith, that the very fame bodies fhall rise. That this obfervation is False, the Author of it might eafily have learned from that * Chapter, which he was confidering; where he might have found yέigetai thrice refer'd to owμa, and once expreffed with it, † σπείρεται σῶμα ψυχικὸν, ἐγείρεται σῶμα πνευματικόν. It is fown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body, or, the Body is fown Natural, the Body is raised Spiritual.

And though this obfervation, as to the other word, ζωοποιηθήσονται, be not Literally false; yet 'tis plainly fo, as to the fubftance and intention of it: For St. Paul fays of God Almighty, ζωοποιήσει καὶ τὰ Iτà σwμata iμãv; + He fhall alfo quicken

your mortal bodies; which words do unqueftionably denote, that the fame Body, which Dies, fhall be Raised again. And this is confirm'd by the Affurance, which the fame Apoftle gives us, * that Chrift Shall change our vile body that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body; where there is no room left for doubt, that in the Refurrection the Bodies of Holy men (who are particularly here spoken of) fhall be the Same which now they have, with this difference; that they will then be devefted of all Infirmities and Imperfections, and render'd Glorious.

But fuppofing that the fentence, which is above fo pofitively pronounced concerning the Sacred Scriptures, had happen'd to be True, it would not have added any Advantage at all to the cause, which this Author efpoufeth: For the quickening and raising of the Dead, expreffions which he fo often refers to, muft denote the quickening and raising
