Our Advocate appears, For our defence on high: In love the Father hears, And lays his thunder by: Thro' him our prayers acceptance gain, Thro' him we hope in heaven to reign.
5 Then let our souls arise,
And tread the tempter down; Our Captain leads us forth, To conquest and a crown: March on nor fear to win the day, Though death and hell obstruct the way.
89. Vine. C. M.
I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without me ye can do nothing.-JOHN XV. 5.
JESUS, immutably the same!
Thou true and living vine!
2 Quicken'd by thee, and kept alive,
3 I can do nothing without thee;
4 Upon my leaf, when parch'd with heat, Refreshing dew shall drop;
The plant, which thy right hand hath Shall ne'er be rooted up. [set,
5 Each moment, water'd by thy care,

I am the true vine. Abide in me and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye except yé abide in me.-JOHN xv. 1, 4.
SON of GOD, thy blessing grant,
With thy sap my spirit feed.

91. The Way, Truth, and Life. L.M.
JESUS saith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me.JOHN xiv. 6.
JESUS, my all, to heaven is gone, He, whom I fix my hopes upou; His track 1 see, and I'll pursue The narrow way, till him I view. 2 The way the holy prophets went, The road that leads from banishment, The King's highway of holiness I'll go, for all his paths are peace.
3 This is the way I long have sought, And mourn'd, because I found it not, My grief a burden long has been, Because I could not cease from sin.
4 The more I strove against its pow'r, I sinn'd and stumbled but the more; Till Jesus did his grace display Himself revealing as "the way."
5 Lo! glad I come, and thou, blest Lamb, Shalt take me to thee, as I am : Nothing but sin 1 thee can give, Nothing but love shall I receive.
6 And henceforth I'll to sinners round Proclaim the Saviour I have found, I'll point to thy redeeming blood, And say, "Behold the way to God."
92. The Way, Truth, and Life. 8—8—6. Ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.-JOHN V. 40.
THERE is no path to heavenly bliss, Or solid joy, or lasting peace,
But CHRIST th' appointed road; O may we tread the sacred way, By faith rejoice, and praise and pray, Till we sit down with God!
2 The types and shadows of the Word
3 As he above for ever lives,
O may his Spirit in me dwell!
93. Wisdom, &c. L. M.
But of him are ye in CHRIST JESUS, who of GOD is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.-1 COR. i. 30.
BURY'D in shadows of the night,
2 Th' awaken'd soul is fill'd with fears,
3 Our very frame is mix'd with sin, But JESU's Spirit makes us clean; Such virtues from his suff'rings flow, To "sanctify" and pardon too.
4 JESUS beholds where Satan reigns, Binding his slaves in heavy chains; He sets the pris'ners free, and breaks The iron boudage from our necks. 5 Poor helpless worms in thee possess Grace, wisdom, pow'r, and righteous
Thou art our mighty All, and we
