445. Supplies in the Wilderness. C.M.

He made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock. PSALM Ixxviii. 52.

WHEN Israel, by divine command,
The pathless desert trod,

They found, though 'twas a barren land,
A sure resource in GOD.

2 A cloudy pillar mark'd their road,
And screen'd them from the heat;
From the hard rocks the water flow'd,
Jas. And manna was their meat.

3 Like them, we have a rest in view,
Secure from adverse pow'rs;

Like them, we pass a desert too,
But Israel's GoD is ours.

5 [Yes, in this barren wilderness He is to us the same

By

his appointed means of grace, As once he was to them.T

5 His word a light before us spreads,
By which our way we see;

His love, a banner o'er our heads,
From harm preserves us free...

JESUS himself becomes our food,
Our living wine and bread;

9d And, blest with every needful good, om10 His joy anoints our head.

7 LORD, 'tis enough, I ask no more, These blessings are divine;

G

I envy not the worldling's store,
If CHRIST and heav'n are mine.

How pleasant and how fair
The dwellings of thy love,
Thine earthly temples are!
To thine abode my heart aspires,
With warm desires to see my GOD.

O happy souls that pray
Where GoD appoints to hear!
O bappy men that pay

Their constant service there:

They praise thee still; and happy they
That love the way to Zion's hill!TM

from strength to strength,

Thro' this dark vale of tears,
Till each o'ercomes at length,
Till each in heav'n appears:

O glorious seat, where GoD our King
Soon too shall bring our willing feet!

GOD is our sun and shield,
Our light and our defence;
With gifts his hands are fill'd,
We draw our blessings thence;
Thrice happy he, O GOD of hosts,
Whose spirit trusts alone in thee.

447. Prayer and Praise. L.M.

Praise waiteth for thee, O GOD, in Zion, &c.-PSALM lxv. 1, &c.

THE praise of Zion waits for thee,
My GOD; and praise becomes thy house;
There shall thy saints thy glory see,
And there perform their public vows.
2 0 thou, whose mercy bends the skies
To save when humble sinners pray;
All lands to thee shall lift their eyes,
And islands of the utmost sea.

3 Against my will my sins prevail,
But grace shall purge away their stain;
The blood of CHRIST will never fail
To wash my garments white again.

4 Blest is the man whom thou shalt choose,
And give him kind access to thee,
Give him a place within thy house,
To taste thy love divinely free.

448. Longing for the House of God. L.M. IN

How amiable are thy tabernacles, O LORD
PSALM lxxxiv.

HOW pleasant, how divinely fair,
O LORD of Hosts, thy dwellings are!
With long desire my spirit faints, T
To meet th' assemblies of thy saints.
2 My flesh would rest in thine abode;
My panting heart cries out for GOD:
My God! my King! why should I be
Afar from all my joys and thee?
3 Blest are the saints who sit on high, &
Around thy throne of majesty ni
Thy brightest glories shine above, Y
And all their work is praise and love.

4 [Blest are the souls that find a place Within the temples of thy gracer There they behold thy gentler rays And seek thy face, and learn thy praise.] 5 Blest are the men whose hearts are set To find the way to Zion's gate;

GOD is their strength; and all the road
They lean upon their helper Gop

6 Cheerful they walk in growing strength;
Till all shall meet in heav'n at length ;
Till all before thy throne appear,
And join in nobler worship there!r

448. 2. The Pleasantness of Praising God. C. M.

Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our GOD; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely.PSALM CXlvii. 1.

COME, ye that love the SAVIOUR'S 19%And joy to make it known; [name, The Sov❜reign of your hearts proclaim, And bow before his throne.

2 Behold your King, your SAVIOUR
With glories all divine; [crown'd
And tell the wond'ring nations round
How bright those glories shine.

3 [Infinite power and boundless grace
In him unite their rays;
You that have e'er beheld his face,
Can you forbear his praise ?]

4 When in his earthly courts we view
The glories of our King,

We long to love as angels do,
And wish like them to sing.

5 And shall we long and wish in vain?
LORD, teach our songs to rise!
Thy love can animate the strain,
And bid it reach the skies.

60-lappy period! glorious day!

When heav'n and earth shail raise, With all their pow'rs the raptur'd lay, To celebrate thy praise!
