206 His Influence Desired. 8-7.

Now our LORD JESUS CHRIST himself, and GOD even our Father, who hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts, and 'stablish you in every good word and work.-2 THESS. ii. 16, 17.

HOLY GHOST, dispel our sadness, Pierce the clouds of nature's night; Come, thou source of joy and gladness, Breathe thy life, and spread thy light, 2 Hear, O hear, our supplication, Loving Spirit, GOD of Peace! Rest upon this congregation, Great distributer of grace! 3 Come, thou best of all donations, GoD can give, or we implore! Having thy sweet consolations, We on earth can wish no more. 4 Author of our new creation, Bid us all thine influence prove; Make our souls thy habitation, Shed abroad the SAVIOUR's love.

207. Leadings of the Holy Spirit. L.M. As many as are led by the Spirit of GOD, they are the Sons of GOD.-ROMANS viii. 14.

COME, gracious Spirit, heav'nly dove,
With light and comfort from above;
Be thou our guardian, thou our guide;
O'er ev'ry thought and step preside.

2 Conduct us safe, conduct us far,
From every sin and hurtful snare;
Lead to thy word; for that must give,
And teach us, lessons how to live.
3 The light of truth to us display,
And make us know and choose thy way;
Plant holy fear in ev'ry heart,
That we from GOD may ne'er depart.
4 Lead us to holiness, the road

That we must take to dwell with GOD:
Lead us to CHRIST, the living way,
Nor let us from his pastures stray.

5 Lead us to GOD, our final rest,
In his enjoyment to be bless'd;
Lead us to heav'n, the seat of bliss,
Where pleasure in perfection is.

208. The New Heart.

C.M.

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. -EZEKIEL Xxxvi. 26.

O FOR an heart to praise my God,
A heart from sin set free!

A heart that's sprinkled with the blood,
So freely shed for me!

2 A heart resign'd, submissive, meek,
My dear REDEEMER's throne;
Where only CHRIST is heard to speak,
Where JESUS reigns alone.

3 An humble, lowly, contrite heart, Believing, true, and clean!

Which neither life, nor death, can part, From him that dwells within.

4 Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart,
Come quickly from above:

Write thy new naine upon my heart,
Thy new,
best name of love.

209. His Influences Desired. S.M.

Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing that ye may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Ghost.-Roм. xv. 13.

COME, Holy Spirit, come!
Let thy bright beams arise;
Dispel the sorrow from our minds,
The darkness from our eyes.

2 Cheer our desponding hearts
With consolations sweet;
Give us to lie, with humble hope,
At our REDEEMER's feet.

4

Revive our drooping faith,
Our doubts and fears remove;

And kindle in our breasts the flame
Of never-dying love.

Convince us of our sin,

Then lead to JESUS' blood,

And to our wond'ring view reveal

The secret love of God.

'Tis thine to cleanse the heart,
T'illuminate the soul,

pour fresh life on ev'ry part,
And new create the whole.

Dwell therefore in our hearts;
Our minds from bondage free;

Then shall we know, and praise, and
The Father, Son, and Thee! [love,

210. The quickening Influence of the Holy Spirit. Š.M.

It is the Spirit that quickeneth.-JOHN vi. 63.
COME, Holy Spirit, come!
With energy divine;

And on this poor benighted soul
With beams of mercy shine.

2 From the celestial hills,

3

4

Life, light, and joy dispense!
And may I daily, hourly feel
Thy quick'ning influence.
Melt, melt, this frozen heart;
This stubborn will subdue;
Each evil passion overcome,
And form my soul anew.

Mine will the profit be,
But thine shall be the praise:
And unto thee I will devote
The remnant of my days.

211. The Witness and Seal of the Holy Spirit. C.M.

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of GOD.-ROM. viii. 16.

WHY should the children of a King
Go mourning all their days?
Great Comforter, desceud and bring
Some tokens of thy grace.

2 Dost thou not dwell in all the saints,
And seal the heirs of heav'n?
When wilt thou banish my complaints,
And show my sins forgiv'n?

3 Assure my conscience of her part
In the REDEEMER'S blood;

And bear thy witness with my heart,
That I am born of GOD.

4 Thou art the earnest of his love,
The Pledge of joys to come;
And thy soft wings, celestial Dove,
Will safe convey me home.
