2 See how we grovel here below,
Fond of these earthly toys;
To reach eternal joys.
In vain we strive to rise;
And our devotion dies.
At this poor dying rate ?
And thine to us so great! 5 Come, Holy Spirit, heav'nly Dove,
With all thy quick’ning pow'rs; Coine, shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And that shall kindle ours.
204. His Influence Desired. L.M. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to
face: now. I know in part; but then shall I know even
And in these earthly houses dwelį! 2 When will these veils of flesh remove,
And not eclipse our sight of God?
3 Show thy omnipotence to save,
The characters of sin efface;
And make us kuow thy saving grace. 4 Dart in our souls a heav'nly ray,
Aray which still may shine more bright,
205. His Influence Desired. 7s. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another
Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.- JOHN xiv. 16.
GRACIOUS Spirit, Love Divine!
Fill us with thy peace and love. 2 Pardon to the contrite give,
Bid the wounded sinner live;
Wash us in his precious blood. 3 Earnest-thou of heavenly rest,
Comfort every troubled breast;
Sanctifying ev'ry heart.
Keep us in our heav'nly way;
206 His Influence Desired. 8-7. Now our LORD JESUS CHRIST himself, and God even our Father, who hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, com, fort your hearts, and 'stablish you in every good word and work.—2 Thess. ii. 16, 17. HOLY GHOST, dispel our sadness, Pierce the clouds of nature's night; . Come, thou source of joy and gladness,
Breathe thy life, and spread thy light, 2 Hear, O hear, our supplication,
Loving Spirit, God of Peace!
Great distributer of grace!
God can give, or we implore!
We on earth can wish no more.
Bid us all thine influence prove;
207. Leadings of the Holy Spirit. L.M.
Sons of GOD.--ROMANS viii. 14.
2 Conduct us safe, conduct us far,
From every sin and hurtful snare;
And teach us, lessons how to live. 3 The light of truth to us display,
And make us know and choose thy way;
That we from God may ne'er depart. 4 Lead us to boliness, the road
That we must take to dwell with God:
Nor let us from his pastures stray. 5 Lead us to God, our final rest,
In his enjoyment to be bless'd;
208. The New Heart. C.M. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I
put within you: and I will take away the stony heart
A heart from sin set free!
So freely shed for me!
My dear REDEEME R's throne; Where only Christ is heard to speak,
Where Jesus reigns alone.
3 An humble, lowly, contrite heart,
Believing, true, and clean !
Froin bim that dwells within.
Come quickly from above:
Thy new, best name of love.
209. His Influences Desired. S.M. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in
believing that ye may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Ghost. Rom. xv. 13.
COME, Holy Spirit, come!
Let thy bright beams arise ;
The darkness from our eyes.
With consolations sweet;
At our REDEEMER's feet.
Our doubts and fears remove;
Of never-dying love.
Then lead to Jesus' blood,
The secret love of God.
