253. BINDING. A blank book in small 8vo, enclosed in a French binding of the 17th century in olive morocco, gilt panelled sides, border of fleurs-de-lis, corner ornaments in the inner panels, with arms in the centre; doublure of same colored morocco, similarly tooled and gilt. The arms are: ... au lion rampant . . . a la bordure. . . semée de fleurs-de-lis . . surmounted by a coronet of count and enclosed in device of the order of St. Michel, with the motto Force los.

254. BINDING. A blank book of 4to size, bound in citron levant morocco gilt; on the sides the ARMS OF VICTOIRELOUISE - MARIE - THERESE, second daughter of Louis XV (1733-1799). Probably bound by Fournier of Versailles.

255. BINDING. A 16mo German binding of the 18th century in repoussé silver; leaf spray borders on the sides, panels, corner pieces and centre medallions; that on the front cover representing two hands reaching for a crown, and that on the back cover a double-headed eagle surmounted by a crown; with clasp.

256. BINDING. A 12mo German silver gilt repoussé binding of the 18th century. Each cover has a pierced frame work of Gothic foliage and birds, with a bas-relief figure on either side; panel on the front cover representing the Nativity, and on the back one the Ascension; repoussé and pierced back.

257. BINDING. A 12mo velvet binding, partly covered with repoussé and pierced silver extending around the covers and back in a very delicate design of foliage and birds; clasps and end-pieces chased in a similar manner, gauffred gilt edges. 18th century.

258. BINDING. Persian binding in red morocco, the sides in sunken compartments on a gold ground; doublure and linings of red morocco, with flowers and ornaments painted in gold in the centre. Early 19th century. Small 8vo.

259. BLANK BOOK. Oblong folio, French purple morocco, the sides in mosiac design of citron, red, brown, pink and green morocco, richly tooled and gilt, in the manner called "cathedral," gilt edges. About 1840.

260. BLANK BOOK. Folio, brown levant morocco, semis of fleurons on the sides, gilt centre and corner ornaments, gilt edges, by Rivière.

261. BOOK COVER. A 12mo book cover in sandal wood; the front cover inlaid with ivory, silver and gold to a rich ornamental pattern, and the back cover inlaid with centre and corner ornaments of gold and silver. Beginning of the 19th century.

* Contemporary Italian binding in olive brown morocco, ornamental borders on the sides stamped on a gold ground, enclosing a panel of interlaced gilt bands with fleurons in the corners; in the centre of the front cover the title of the book, and in the extreme lower part the name "Io GROLIERII ET AMICORVM"; in the centre of the back cover Grolier's motto PORTIO MEA DOMINE SIT IN TERRA VIVENTIVM"; gilt edges, preserved in a morocco slip case.

* ONLY TWO OTHER COPIES ARE KNOWN, one in the Bodleian Library, the other in the University Library of Cambridge. From the Preface it appears to have been extracted by Henry Watson from a French translation of St. Bernardin's book entitled Christian Religion. It is a severe invective against all kinds of gamesters, especially players at cards and dice.
