2063. HORE BEATÆ MARIE VIRGINIS ad Usum Romanum cum Calendario. MANUSCRIPT OF THE FIRST PART OF THE XVTH CENTURY WRITTEN ON VELLUM IN LARGE GOTHIC CHARACTERS, RED AND BLACK; executed in the North-East of France. 253 leaves (8% x 64 inches). Ornamented with 11 large miniatures, surrounded by ivy-leaf borders introducing flowers, leaves, etc., in gold and colors, and numerous large and small illuminated initials. 4to, dark green levant morocco, the sides richly tooled and gilt in compartments of "pointillé," in the manner of Le Gascon; doublure of red morocco, gilt tooled in panels, centre and corner ornaments of pointillé, gilt edges. In a morocco case. Sæc. XV

* AN INTERESTING MANUSCRIPT. The miniatures, although somewhat rubbed, are the work of a Flemish artist, above the average in ability. The Calendar (not full) has Valentine, Juliana, Albinus, Gertrude, Eutropius, Theodolus, Mamert, Desiderius, Medardus, Anianus, Ciricus (Quiricus), Theobald, Romanus, Ypolitus, Arnulphus, Mammes, Lambert, Eustachius, Maurice, Ursin. Leaves 155r. to 163r. contain the Litany in Latin verse of Pierre de Luxembourg, Cardinal and Bishop of Metz, a feature of very rare occurrence. The Memoriae include St. Avia.

2064. HORE BEATE MARIE VIRGINIS secundum usum Romanum cum Calendario. Manuscript of the XVth century on vellum, written in large Gothic characters in red and black; probably executed by a Flemish scribe, in the North East of France. 180 leaves (8 x 51⁄4 inches). Ornamented with 25 fine miniatures (6 large and 19 small), 28 borders of scrolls, fruits, flowers, birds, and animals, 6 initials and numerous capitals, all illuminated in gold and colors. 4to, contemporary binding of oak boards covered with leather stamped in compartments surrounded by inscriptions, chased perforated clasps containing small oval miniatures of two saints, enclosed in glass, gilt edges. * In the Calendar (not full) in red are Vedastus & Amandus, Boniface Bp., Basilius Bp., Transl. S. Thomæ, Transl. Benedicti, Remigius & Bavo, Donatianus, Nicanus, Nicasius. In black Aldegunda, Valentine, Alexander, Gertrude, Quintine, Servatius, Bertinus, Hubertus. The Litany has Gengulphus (Toul), confessor; Godeleva, virgin. There is a strong Flemish influence shown, which points to North East France as the provenance.

2065. HORÆ BEATÆ MARIÆ VIRGINIS, cum Calendario. MANUSCRIPT OF THE XVTH CENTURY ON VELLUM WRITTEN IN LETTRES BÂTARDES IN RED AND BLACK, AND PROBABLY EXECUTED AT SENS OR IN THAT NEIGHBORHOOD. 115 leaves (6 3/16 x 44 inches). Ornamented with 14 large miniatures, and 28 borders of flowers, fruits, birds, insects, human figures, scrolls, etc., in gold and colors; also numerous illuminated initials. 8vo, mauve velvet, silver gilt clasps, gauffred gilt edges. In a silk bag. Sæc. XV

* The service agrees with that of Rome, except the Capitulum at Lauds and the Litany, which are of Sens. The Calendar has Leu (Sens), Savinian (Sens), Barbara in red, and again Savinia, in black; the Litany invokes Cavinian, Potentian (Sens), martyrs; Maturin, confessor; at the end are memoriae of St. Adrian and St. Maturin.

2066. HORÆ BEATÆ MARIÆ VIRGINIS, cum calendario. MANUSCRIPT OF THE XVTH CENTURY, IN GOTHIC CHARACTERS RED AND BLACK, ON VELLUM, executed in the Low Countries, and written in Flemish throughout. 220 leaves (7 x 48 inches). Embellished with elaborate borders in red, blue, and gold, some introducing flowers, peacocks, storks, and other birds; also numerous large and small ornamental initials in blue and red ink. 8vo, brown levant morocco, gilt centre and corner ornaments on the sides, doublure of vellum, gauffred gilt edges, by Mercier, in a levant morocco slip case. Sæc. XV

* The Calendar has Pontianus, Odulphus, Leboinus, Pancratius, Servatius, Bonifacius, Lambert, Remigius and Bavo, Gereon, Willibrord, in red. The Litany invokes Gereon, Adrian, Qurinus, Pancratius, Bonifacius, Lambert, Alban, Abdon, Eustacius, Valentine Theodorus, Yvo, martyrs; Hylarius, Eusebius, Vedastus, Bavo, Willibrord, Severinus, Gallus, Hubert, Servatius, Leboinus, Ludger, Odulphus, Radbod, Eworit, confessors; Ursula, Perpetua, Tecla, Dorothea, Christina, Columba, Benedicta, Walburga, Gertrude, Afra, Brigida, virgins.

* A Dutch Book of Hours written in gothic characters upon vellum in the fifteenth century. 178 x 127 mm.

It contains 220 leaves, including 10 for the Calendar, with 21 lines to the page. There are no miniatures in this volume, but it has elaborately executed borders in red and blue ink issuing
