THE SENATE, The original Senate was appointed by Proclamation on the 24th of December, 1850, under the Act of Incorporation, and consisted of the following: The Rev. His Honour Roger Therry, Esq. * Mr. Russell having retired during his year of office, the Hon. Dr. Renwick was -elected in his place for the remainder of the year. The Hon. Dr. Renwick having retired during his year of office, Judge Backhouse was elected in his place for the remainder of the year. Under the original Incorporation Act, the election to vacant Fellowships was vested in the Senate until there should be one hundred Graduates holding the Degree of M.A., LL.D., or M.D. By an Act passed in 1861, the election to vacancies was vested in Fellows of the Senate, Professors and other Public Teachers of the University, Examiners, Principals of Incorporated Colleges within the University, Superior Officers declared to be such by By-law, and Graduates who should have taken any or either of the Degrees of M.A., LL.D., or M.D. By an Act passed in 1881, the privilege of voting at such elections was extended to Bachelors of Arts of three years' standing, and by the University Extension Act of 1884 the privilege was further extended to all Bachelors of three years' standing. In addition to the sixteen Fellows, it was provided by the Act of 1861 that there should not be fewer than three, nor more than six, ex officio Members of the Senate being Professors of the University in such branches of learning. as the Senate might by any By-law select. The provisions of the above mentioned Acts are incorporated in the University and. University Colleges Act of 1900.
