VI. SIR NICHOLAS TEMPEST, then in an impoverished condition, who was allowed an annuity of £240, by Lord Widdrington. He m. Anne, daughter of Mr. Price, but died s. p. 31st May, 1742, aged seventy-eight, when the BARONETCY became EXTINCT.

Lineage.

The TEMPESTS were of rank in the county of York at a very remote era, and during the sway of the Planta

RICHARD DE TONG held the manor of Tong in 1194 of Hugh Neville, of Brearley, as lord of the fee, and it continued in his family until the reign of HENRY VI. when

HUGH DE TONG, left an only daughter and heiress, MARGARET DE TONG, who conveyed the lordship of TONG to her husband, ROBERT, son and heir of WILLIAM MIRFIELD, esq. of Howley Hall, in the

genets, were frequently entrusted with high commands upon the Scottish border. The pedigree is so amply set forth under TEMPEST OF BROUGHTON, at page 474, and PLUMBE-TEMPEST, page 288, in the first volume of BURKE'S History of the Commoners, that for the early descents we shall refer to that work, and commence the family before us, with the person who acquired TONG HALL, by which designation his descendant was eventually raised to a baronetcy.

HENRY TEMPEST, esq. eighth son of Sir Richard Tempest, knt. of Bracewell, in the county of York, by Rosamond, daughter and heir of Tristram Bolling, esq. of Bolling Hall, in the same county, married ELLINOR, daughter and heir of CHRISтtopher Mirfield, esq. of Tong Hall, also in Yorkshire, and thereby acquired the lordship of Tong. He d. in 1591, and was s. by his son,

JOHN TEMPEST, esq. of Tong Hall. This gentleman married Katherine, daughter of Robert Duckinfield, esq. of Duckinfield, in the county palatine of Chester, and left at his decease in 1623, a son and heir,

HENRY TEMPEST, esq. of Tong Hall, elected M.P. for the county of York in 1654 and 1656. He married Mary, daughter of Nicholas Bushall, esq. of Bagdall Hall, and dying in 1657, was s. by his son,

1. JOHN TEMPEST, esq. of Tong Hall, who was created a BARONET 25th May, 1664. He married Henrietta-Catharina, daughter and heir of Sir Henry Cholmley, knt. of Newton Grange, in the county of York, and had issue,

HENRY, of Newton Grange, in right of his mother, at the decease of that lady in 1680, m. Alathea, daughter of Sir Henry Thompson, of Marston, in Yorkshire, and had two daughters, who both died unm. He d. in 1685, before his father.

IV. SIR HENRY TEMPEST, who married Sarah-Pritchard, only child of Henry Lambert, esq. of Hope End, in Herefordshire, and thus acquired that estate. Sir Henry d. 29th January, 1819, when the BARONETCY EXPIRED. The estate of Tong, with the representation of the family devolved upon his cousin,

ELIZABETH TEMPEST, who wedded Thomas Plumbe, son and heir of William Plumbe, esq. of Wavertree Hall, and of Aughton, both in the county of Lancaster, and had a numerous family, of whom, her eldest son and heir, having assumed the additional surname and arms of Temple, is the present (1838)

JOHN PLUMBE-TEMPEST, esq. of Tong Hall, Yorkshire, and of Aughton, in Lancashire, colonel of the first royal Lancashire militia.

I. SIR WILLIAM TEMPLE, (elder brother of Sir John Temple, speaker of the Irish House of Commons, ancestor of the VISCOUNTS PALMERSTON,) had a rever sionary grant, after his father's decease, of the Mastership of the Rolls. He was created a BARONET 31st January, 1665, and sworn of the privy council. Sir William established a very high reputation for learning and abilities, and his writings on various subjects are greatly esteemed. He m. Dorothy, second daughter of Sir Peter Osborn, and had an only son,

FISHER TENCH, esq. of Low Leyton, in Essex, (only surviving son of Nathaniel Tench, esq. of Low Leyton, who died 2nd April, 1710, aged seventy-eight) served the office of sheriff of Essex in 1712, and was created a BARONET 8th August, 1715. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Bird, esq. and had issue, NATHANIEL, his heir.

JANE, married to Adam Soresby, esq. of Chester field, in Derbyshire, but died s. p. 18th May,

1752.

Sir Fisher d. 31st October, 1736, aged sixty-three, and was s. by his son,

II. SIR NATHANIEL TENCH, of Low Leyton, at whose decease unm. 2nd June, 1737, aged forty, the BARO NETCY became EXTINCT.

JOHN THOMPSON, esq. of Haversham, in the county of Bucks, son of Maurice Thompson, esq. of Haversham, and descended from Maurice Thompson, esq. of Cheston, Herts, was created a BARONET 12th December, 1673. Sir John was a leading member of the House of Commons, and having devoted himself zealously in the promotion of the Revolution, was raised to the peerage as BARON HAVERSHAM, in 1696. He married first, Lady Frances Annesley, daughter of Arthur, first Earl of Anglesey, and widow of John Wyndham, esq. of Fellbrigge, by whom he had issue,
