RICHARD DE PRESTON, his son and heir, was witness, .D. 1333, to a release of lands, at Old Hutton, by ilbert de Culwen to Thomas, son of Patric de Culwen. y Annabella, his wife, who survived him, he had issue, SIR RICHARD DE PRESTON, who represented the unty of Westmoreland in parliament 17 EDWARD 1. SIR RICHARD DE PRESTON, had likewise the honour being knight of the shire for Westmoreland 27 EDARD III, his father being then still living. In the ar 1368, he obtained a license to impark five huned acres of land. His successor,

'This romantic seat, so much admired for the beauty its park and gardens (which latter are preserved in old style), passed from the Redmaynes to the Belghams, and from them to the Grahams, and then to Suffolk family, and is now possessed in right of his rriage by the Hon. Colonel Fulk-Greville Howard, other to Lord Templetown.

Sir Thomas Tildesley, the celebrated loyalist, who lost his life at Wigan Lane. She m. secondly, Thomas Latham, esq. of Parbold; and thirdly, Thomas Westby, esq. of Mowbreck, and had issue by each husband. bristopher Preston died 27th May, 1594, and was buried : Cartmel Church.

JOHN PRESTON, esq. of Holker, his son and heir, m. Label, daughter and heiress of William Benson, esq. of lagill, which lady brought to her husband a moiety of be manor of Preston Richard, which had been carried st of the Preston family by heiresses, temp. HENRY IV.; 7 her he had one son, GEORGE, his only child. Mr. Preston died 11th September, 1597, and was buried at artmel. His widow m. secondly, Thomas Ffarington, of Werden, in the county of Lancaster. GEORGE PRESTON, esq. of Holker, son and heir, was * great benefactor to the stately church of Cartmel. He also made an appointment for the apprenticing the sons poor people in Cartmel, and a foundation for fitting veral scholars for St. John's College, Oxford. He m.

SIR THOMAS PRESTON, of Preston Patrick and Under Levins Halls, in Westmoreland, and Furness Abbey and Holkar Park, Lancashire, who soon after the dissolution of the monasteries purchased from the trustees of the crown the site of the abbey of Furness, with other large estates, in value amounting to upwards of £3000 a year. He wedded Ann, daughter of William Thornburgh, esq. of Hampsfield, in Lancashire, which lady was, through the families of Musgrave, Fitzwilliam, Plantagenet, and De Warren, fifteenth in descent from King WILLIAM the Conqueror. By her he had issue,

Mr. Preston d. in April, 1640, and was buried at Cartmel, and was succeeded by

THOMAS PRESTON, esq. of Holker, his son and heir. He was deputy-lieutenant of Lancashire, and high sheriff in 1664. In early life he (with his kinsmen, the Prestons of the Manor and of Cockerham) taking up arms for the king greatly damaged his estate; but after the Restoration he was one of those gentlemen in Lancashire whom CHARLES II. for their loyalty had selected for the order of the Royal Oak, had it been instituted, his estate being then valued at £2000 per annum. Sir Thomas died in 1523, and was succeeded by his eldest son,

uncle, Thomas Preston. He was born in
1673, and was living in 1698.

Mr. Preston died at Holker, 9th January, 1678, and was succeeded by

THOMAS PRESTON, esq. of Holker, his only surviving son. He was born in 1646. When his kinsman, Sir Thomas Preston, bart. settled the manor of Furness upon the Jesuits, his indignation was so strongly excited, that he endeavoured by all means in his power to persuade the Prestons of Cockerham (who were Sir Thomas's heirs male) to prosecute the suit against them; but they being advised that even if the suit should terminate favourably, it would be forfeited to the crown, and being greatly impoverished by the exertions they had made only a few years before in the royal cause, and having little interest at court, abandoned all idea of it; whereupon he undertook it, and after some years and enor mous expense, succeeded in proving that it was forfeited to the crown, upon which it was immediately seized: but Mr. Preston having considerable interest, and his services having been properly represented, he obtained

of the Manor." He was sheriff of Lancashire in 1569. He married Margaret, daughter to Sir The mas Curwen, of Workington, in Cumberland, br Agnes, daughter to Sir Walter Strickland, of Sy zergh Castle, and by her had issue,

Mr. Preston died in December, 1596, and was succeeded by his eldest son,

WILLIAM PRESTON, of Cockerham, who died in May, 1623, leaving issue by his wife. who died in June, 1612, a son, WILLIAM PRESTON, of Cockerham, who upon the breaking out of the civil wars taking up arms for King CHARLES ! thereby greatly incumbered bis estate his name was included in the list of loyal ists whose estates were declared to be forfeited to the parliament by an act passed 19th November, 1652. He married first, 24th July, 1618, Clement, daughter of Braide; and secondly, 9th May. 1642, Elizabeth Denys, and was succeeded by his only surviving son by his first marriage,

WILLIAM PRESTON, of Cockerham, born January, 1632, died in April, 1685, leaving

from the crown a long lease of the whole estate upo most advantageous terms. He subsequently represented Lancaster in parliament. He m. first, Mary, daughter of George Dodding, esq. of Conishead Priory, but by her had no issue; and secondly, Elizabeth, daughter to Sir Roger Bradshaigh, bart. of Haigh (a lady of incr parable prudence) by whom he had

Katharine Preston, sole heiress, who . Sir William Lowther, bart. of Marske, and conveyed to big. all the large property in Lancashire of the Presta family.

Mr. Preston d. in London, 31st January, 196, but wall buried at Cartmel. His lady surviving him, died 29th February, 1732, and was likewise buried there, where there are numerous splendid monuments of the family. |

He bad a second wife, Dorothy, daughter of Laya ton, esq. of Dalemaine, in Cumberland, and relict Richard Redmayne, esq. of Over Levins, Westmoreland and Harewood Castle, Yorkshire, but had no issue by

her.

There is no further mention of this branch made in th Visitations; but even if it does not now exist, it m have continued in the male line nearly a century beyang this period, as the late Robert Preston, esq. distinctly remembered having been told by his father that É father and mother (Richard Preston and Mary Hastings had shortly after their marriage been on a visit to th relations, the Prestons of Devonshire.

by Alice, his first wife, who died in February, 1678 (with other issue), RICHARD PRESTON, of Cockerham, born 17th September, 1661, who, partly in consequence of the incumbrances created by the loyalty of his grandfather to King CHARLES, and partly in consequence of his own extravagance, was forced to alienate nearly all his property. He died in 1721, aged sixty years, having had (surviving) issue by Dorothy, his first wife, daughter and co-heir of Robert Dennis,

1. JOHN, who succeeded to the wreck of the Cockerham estate, which he sold, and purchasing from the heirs of Sir Thomas Preston, and also acquiring by marriage estates in Preston Patrick, Leasgill, and Heversham, he thenceforth wholly resided in Westmoreland. He left (surviving male) issue,

William, D.D. Lord Bishop of Ferns, who died in 1789, aged sixty.

John Preston, of Leasgill, died 28th June, 1816, without male issue.

By his second, Mary, daughter and coheir of Henry Hastings, of Dublin, a branch of the noble house of Huntingdon, who surviving him forty-four years, died 7th March, 1765 (with three daughters), an only surviving son,

2. Robert, born 29th May, 1713, died 18th March, 1788, leaving by Margaret, his wife, only child of Robert Bouker, of Broughton, gent, who died in July, 1802, with other issue,

Robert, born 26th April, 1792, who m. Ellen Sarah, daughter of Peter Berthon, esq. and by her (who m. secondly, William-Robert Preston, esq. of Aigburth) had issue, with two daughters, one son,

Robert-Berthon Preston, a minor, now living. Richard, of Liverpool, who m. first, Miss Collins; and secondly, Isabella, daughter of Mr. Edward Rushton, of Liverpool, and died 1st November, 1820, leaving issue.

William, of Birchfield, afterwards of Fairview, Toxteth Park, and Liverpool, who died 16th May, 1828, leaving (with a younger son and two daughters)

1808, m. as above-mentioned, Ellen-Sarah, relict of Robert Preston, jun. esq. and has issue.

He married Margaret, daughter of John Westby, esq. of Moubreck, and dying 14th June, 1604, was buried at Heversham, being succeeded by

Mr. Preston's will bears date September, 1612, and he died shortly afterwards, being succeeded by his only surviving son,

JOHN PRESTON, esq. of Preston Patrick and Under Levins Halls, in Westmoreland, and of the Manor and Abbey of Furness, in Lancashire, who upon the breaking out of the civil wars, took part with the king, and rendered that unfortunate monarch such efficient service that he was in return created a BARONET 1st April, 1644, by the style of Sir John Preston, "of the Manor of Furness." He did not, however, long enjoy his dignity, being slain at the head of a regiment raised at his own expense in an engagement with the parliamentary troops, A. D. 1645. He married, in 1637, Jane, daughter and sole heir of Thomas Morgan, esq. of Heyford Hall, in Northamp tonshire, and Weston sub-Weathley, in Warwickshire, and by her, who brought him a vast estate, he had issue,

11. SIR JOHN PRESTON, bart. dying unm. in April, 1663, was succeeded by his brother,

SIR THOMAS PRESTON, of the Manor and Abbey of Furness, in Lancashire, Preston Patrick and Under Levins Halls, in Westmoreland, and Heyford Hall, in Northamptonshire, who thus became third baronet. Sir Thomas had been a Catholic priest, but on succeeding to the title he obtained a dispensation from the Pope, and married the Hon. Mary Molyneux, daughter of Caryll, third Viscount Molyneux, by whom he had issue,

A portion of the estate acquired by him at Preston Patrick has since been sold by his representatives, and Her portion is now in the possession of Richard Rushton Preston, esq.

1. Mary, who m. William, Marquis of Powis.
11. Ann, who m. Hugh, second Lord Clifford, of
Chudleigh.

Lady Preston died 6th June, 1673, and Sir Thomas
being now a widower, was persuaded to return to his
former functions; whereupon he settled his Westmore-
land and Northamptonshire estates upon his daughters,
and the estate of the Manor and Abbey of Furness
the Jesuits; upon the legality of this grant a trial
upon
arose, and the estate was adjudged to be forfeited to
the crown, which immediately seized upon it, but
granted a long lease of the abbey to the Prestons of
Holker, who had been mainly instrumental in bring-
ing to light the illegal settlement made by Sir Thomas
Preston. Sir Thomas, after making this disposition of
his property, went over to Flanders, and entering a
monastery there, spent the remainder of his days, and
died about the year 1710, and with him EXPIRED the
BARONETCY of "Preston of the Manor."

PRESTWICH, OF HOLM. CREATED 25th April, 1644.-EXTINCT in 1689.

Lineage.

I. THOMAS PRESTWICH, esq. of Holm, in Lancashire, the descendant of an ancient Lancastrian family, was created a BARONET in 1644, but died without male issue in 1689, when the title became EXTINCT, though it was assumed by the subsequent proprietors of Holm.

JOHN, whose grandson, RoSE PRICE, esq. was created a BARONET in 1815, and was s. by his son, the present SIR CHARLES DUTTON PRICE, bart. of Trengwainton. (See BURKE's Peerage and Baronetage.)

The eldest son,

1. CHARLES PRICE, esq. of Rose Hall, obtained the name of "the Patriot," for the numerous acts of public munificence he performed for a series of years in Jamaica, his native country. He filled, for a lengthened period, the chair of the honourable house of Assembly, and was created a BARONET 7th October, 1768. He died in 1772, leaving by Mary Sharpe, his wife, three sons and a daughter, viz.

John, who d. and was buried at Lincoln.
ROSE, successor to his brother.

Sarah, m. to a gentleman named Archbold.
The eldest son,

11. SIR CHARLES PRICE, of Rose Hall, also succeeded his father as speaker of the house of Assembly. He m. Elizabeth, daughter of John Guy, esq. of Berkshire House, in Jamaica, and widow of John Woodcock, esq. but died s. p. 18th October, 1788, when he was & by his brother,

III. SIR ROSE PRICE, of Rose Hall, at whose decease s. p. the BARONETCY became EXTINCT.

Lineage.

FRANCIS PRICE, the first of this family upon record, went out to Jamaica a captain in the army, under Penn and Venables, in 1655, and settling there, m. the rich widow of Colonel Rose, and left at his decease three sons and a daughter, of whom

CHARLES PRICE, esq. being the adopted heir of his maternal half brother, Thomas Rose, esq. became possessed by will of "Rose Hall," in St. Thomas's in the Vale, and other considerable estates in Jamaica. He m. Sarah, daughter of Philip Edmunds, esq. also of that island, and had issue,

Lineage.

The Pringles are of very ancient descent, and still possess considerable influence in North Britain. The chief families of the name are the PRINGLES of Whyt bank (now represented by ALEXANDER PRINGLE, esq M.P. for Selkirkshire), the PRINGLES of Clifton (now) represented by ROBERT PRINGLE, esq.), and the PRIN GLES of Stitchel.

I. JOHN PRINGLE, M. D. of Pall Mall, physician t the army, temp. GEORGE II. (youngest son of Sir John Pringle, bart. of Stitchel House, in the county of Rax burgh, vide BURKE'S Peerage and Baronetage,) created BARONET 5th June, 1766. Sir John 1752, Charlotte, second daughter of Dr. Oliver, eminent physician at Bath, but died without iss 18th January, 1782. Sir John Pringle was appointed one of the physicians to King GEORGE III. At his cease the BARONETCY became EXTINCT.

Ellen, daughter of Edward Allen, esq. of Finchley, in Middlesex, and dying 10th February, 1667, left issue two daughters, Elizabeth and Helen, and three sons, THOMAS, JOHN, and Heneage. The eldest,

1. THOMAS PROBY, esq. of Elton, M. P. for Agmondesham, and subsequently in 1661, for Huntingdonshire, who was created a BARONET in 1661-2. He m. Frances, daughter of Sir Thomas Cotton, bart. of Connington, in Huntingdonshire, and had issue,
