This gentleman devoted himself to the improvement of his seat at Hartwell, displaying great taste in his manner of planting and laying out the grounds, and his additions to the mansion house, the east and south fronts of which he reilt: he also rebuilt the parish church, to which his acles contributed, viz. the Chief Justice £1000, and Fir George Lee £500. He was distinguished by his nevolent attentions to the poor, and having studied The science of medicine, was their gratuitous physician. Sir William m. in 1763, Lady Elizabeth Harcourt, laughter of Simon, Earl of Harcourt, and had issue,

I. HUMPHREY LEE, esq. of Langley and Acton Burnell, in Shropshire, son of Richard Lee, esq. of Langley, by Eleanor, his wife, daughter of Walter Wrottesley, esq. of Wrottesley, was fourth in descent from Richard Lee, esq. sheriff of the county in 1479, and representative of one of the oldest families in England. In 1620 he was created a BARONET, being the first Shropshire gentleman who received that honour. He m. Margaret, daughter of Richard Corbett, esq. of Stoke, one of the judges of the court of King's Bench, and had issue,

II. SIR RICHARD LEE, of Langley and Acton Burnell, M. P. for Salop, who suffered much in the royal cause, and had to compound for his estate in the sum of £3719. He m. Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Edward Allen, knt. alderman of London, and left at his decease, in April, 1660, issue, to survive him, two daughters, his co-heirs, viz.

RACHAEL, m. to Ralph Cleaton, esq. second son of Ralph Cleaton, of Oneley, in Salop; she obtained for her inheritance Lea Hall and the other estates of her ancestors in that neighbourhood, and transmitted them to her descendant in the third generation,

RICHARD CLEATON, who had two daughters, ALATHEA, m. to James Apperley, M. D. JANE, m. to Watkin Williams Wynne, esq. of Voclas, in Denbighshire, whose daughters married, the one the Hon. Charles Finch, and the other, Thomas Assheton Smith, esq. of Tedworth, Hants. Lea Hall and the other estates were sold to Sir Thomas Tyrwhitt Jones, bart.

The LEICESTERS, (or LEYCESTERS, as formerly writ ten,) are of great antiquity in the county of Chester, and enjoyed lands there so early as the time of King JOHN.

SIR NICHOLAS DE LEICESTER, knt. who d. in 1295, m. Margaret, daughter of Geffery Dutton, and ac quired thereby the village, manors, and mansion of Nether-Tabley, Wethall, &c. His son and heir,

ROGER LEICESTER, resided at Wethall, and had a grant from Sir John de Grey, son of Reginald de Grey, justice of Chester, of a third part of Over Tabley, cum Ludlow, which places were given to the said Sir John by William de Tabley, Lord of Tabley and Knutsford. This Roger died about the year 1349, and was s. by his son,

NICHOLAS LEICESTER, who died in the same year, leaving by his wife, Mary, daughter of William Mobberley, of Mobberley, co-heir of her mother, Maud, and half sister of Sir Ralph Mobberley,

Ralph, who m. Joan, daughter and heir of Robert Toft, of Toft, in Cheshire, and died temp. RICHARD II. He was ancestor of the LEYCESTERS of Toft Hall, now represented by RALPH LEYCESTER, esq. of Toft Hall; of the LEYCESTERS of Poole, whose heiress, Mary, married Sir Henry Delves, bart.; and of the present GEORGE HANMER LEYCESTER, esq. of White Place, near Maidenhead, Berkshire.

The elder son and heir,

JOHN LEICESTER, served in the French wars in 1373 and 1380, under JOHN of Gaunt, and erected the manor hall of Nether Tabley, 4 RICHARD II. He married the next year, Joan, daughter of Robert Touchet, of Nether Whetley, and dying in 1398, was s. by his

son,

WILLIAM LEICESTER, who is the first of the family styled "de Tabley," but this may be in consequence of the statute of additions, passed in 1 HENRY V.;

Jeffery Dutton (writes Sir Peter Leicester, the historian of Cheshire), son of Adam de Dutton, gave Nether Tabley to his daughter Margaret, and her heirs, about the end of the reign of HENRY III. This Margaret first married Robert de Denbigh, and had no issue. Afterwards she married Nicholas de Leicester, by whom she had issue, and to whose succeeding progeny the manor

for, previously to the enactment of that law, few were written of any place or with the title of esquire. Certain it is, that this William lived at his manor house of Nether Tabley, which continues to the present time the seat of his descendants. He m. two wives, but left issue only by one, Agnes, sister of Sir Piers Dutton, viz. JOHN, Lawrence, and Jeffery. He d. in 1428, and was s. by the eldest,

JOHN LEICESTER, esq. of Nether Tabley, who m. in of 1422, Elizabeth, daughter of Hammon Massey, esq. Rixton, in Lancashire, and had six sons, JOHN, his heir; Hammon, parson of Mobberly; Randle; Nicho las; Henry; and William. He d. in 1462, and was s. by his eldest son,

JOHN LEICESTER, esq. of Tabley, who m. in 142, Margery, daughter of John Legh, esq. of High Legh, in Westhall, and dying in 1496, was s. by his eldest

son,

THOMAS LEICESTER, esq. of Nether Tabley, who s. Margaret, sixth daughter and co-heir of Robert Gras venor, esq. of Houlme, near Peover, and so acquired a moiety of Nether and Little Peover, and one-third of Over Alderley, with lands in Allostock and Hope; by this lady he had a son, JOHN, his heir: after her decease, he married three other wives, by the first of whom he had two other sons. He d. in 1526, and was s. by his eldest son,

JOHN LEICESTER, esq. of Tabley. This gentleman m. first, in 1479, Lucy, daughter of John Ratcliffe, of Ratcliffe, in Lancashire, and had a son, William, who wedded Anne, daughter of Richard Sneyd, of Bradwell, in Staffordshire, but died issueless. He (John) m. secondly, in 1499, Alice, daughter of Henry Henshaw, esq. of Milne House, by Chelford, and by that lady had issue,

He d. 8th April, 1577, was buried at Badworth on the 11th, and s. by his eldest son,

Elizabeth, daughter and sole heir of Edward Col wich, esq. of Colwich, in Staffordshire, and died 21st July, 1581, leaving three daughters, Alice, m. to Sir George Leycester, of Toft; Elizabeth, . to George Legh, esq. of East Hall, in High Legh; and Katharine, m. to John Ireland, esq. of Hutt; when he was s. 11. SIR ROBERT LEICESTER, b. 11th September, 1643, married 6th June, 1667, Meriel, daughter and heir of Francis Watson, esq. of Church Aston, in Salop, and had surviving issue,

III. SIR FRANCIS LEICESTER, b. 30th July, 1674, M. P. for Newton, in the county of Lancaster, who . Frances, daughter and sole heir of Joshua Wilson, esq. of Colton, in Yorkshire, and widow of Bryan Thornhill, esq. by whom he had one daughter. He d. 5th August, 1742, when the BARONETCY became EXTINCT. His only child and heiress,

MERIEL LEICESTER, b. 25th November, 1705, m. first, in 1723, Fleetwood Legh, esq. of Bank, and by him. who d. in 1725, had a daughter,

This was a branch of the great Cheshire family of Legh, founded by

SIR THOMAS LEIGH, knt. lord mayor of London in 1558, great great-grandson of Sir Peter Leigh, knight-banheret, who fell at Agincourt in 1415. Sir Thomas was brought up by Sir Rowland Hill, an opulent merchant and alderman of the same city, and obtained the hand f his favourite niece, Alice Barker, otherwise Covedale, in marriage, and with her the greater part of his wealth. Sir Thomas received the honour of knightåned during his mayoralty, and dying 15th November, 1571, was buried in Mercers' Chapel, London. widow survived him two-and-thirty years; she resided * Stoneleigh, and lived to see her children's children to the fourth generation. She was interred in 1603 at

that place, where she had founded an hospital for five poor men and five poor women, all to be unmarried, and to be nominated after her decease by her third son, Sir Thomas Leigh, of Stoneleigh, and his heirs for ever. She had issue by Sir Thomas Leigh,

1. THOMAS (Sir), his heir, who m. first, Anne, daughter and sole heir of Richard Bingham, esq. of Lambeth, in Surrey, and had a daughter, Anne, who died young. He m. secondly, Jane, daughter of Patrick Fitzmaurice, Lord Kerry, and dying before his father, left THOMAS, Successor to his grandfather. Honora, m. first, to Sir William Egerton; and secondly, to Hugh, Lord Willoughby, of Parham.

VI. SIR EDWARD LEIGH, fifth Lord Leigh, who died unmarried 26th May, 1786, when all his honours, including the BARONETCY, are presumed to have become EXTINCT. Stoneleigh, at the decease of his lordship, devolved upon his only surviving sister,

THE HON. MARY LEIGH; and at her death, 2nd July, 1806, it came to the Rev. Thomas Leigh; and from him passed to his nephew, James-Henry Leigh, esq. of Addlestrop, father of the present (1837)

1. FRANCIS LEICH, esq. of Newnham, who was cre ated a BARONET 24th December, 1618, and raised to the peerage ten years after as Baron Dunsmore. His lordship having subsequently distinguished himself in the cause of royalty during the civil war, was created Earl of Chichester in 1644. He m. first, Suran, daughter and heir of Richard Northan, esq. but by her had no issue. He wedded, secondly, Audrey, daughter and co-heir of Sir John Butler, Baron Butler, of Bramfield, and widow of Sir Francis Anderson, and by that lady had

1. SIR FRANCIS LEKE, knt. of Sutton, in the county of Derby, being a gentleman of ancient family and ample fortune, was created a BARONET on the insti tution of the order, 22nd May, 1611. In thirteen years after he was raised to the peerage, as Baron Deincourt, of Sutton; and taking an active part in favour of the king during the civil war, was made Earl of Scarsdale in 1645. He m. Anne, daughter of Sir E3ward Carey, knt. of Berkhampstead, in the county of Hertford, and had issue,

cloth, and causing his grave to be dug some years before his death, laid himself therein every Friday for divine meditation and prayer. He d. in 1655, and was s. by his son,

JAMES II. was lordlieutenant of Derbyshire, colonel of horse, and groom of the stole to Prince GEORGE of Denmark. He died in 1707, and was s. by his nephew,

In 1634 he served the office of sheriff for that county, and was elected to parliament by the borough of Hertford in 1645. He m. Rebecca, daughter and co-heir of Edward Prescot, of Thoby, in Essex, and of London, salter, by whom he had issue,
