Within this Book a guide you'll find
To gain the object of your mind.

A faithful friend 'twill prove to you,
A counsellor sincere and true,

A pilot to that happy state

Which all true lovers contemplate.

T may be asked what could have induced the Author to undertake the task set before him in compiling and publishing the present work.

To this he would reply that in the course

of a lengthened experience, and close observation of human nature in this and other lands, he has seen so much confusion in matrimonial affairs, so many unhappy marriages, and so vast an amount of misery resulting therefrom, that he has felt it to be a conscientious duty to
