Archibald Menzies, Efq; of Culdairs, one of the commiffioners of his Majesty's revenue of customs, and one of the truftees for improvements in Scotland, died lately in the neighbourhood of Edinburgh. While his family, friends, and acquaintance, are thus deprived of a moft valuable man, Philofophical Society, at the place of its refidence, has loft one of its greatest ornaments. Improvement in fcience, and in ufeful, as well as polite arts, had been the great objects of his attention, during the course of his travels, for several years, through different parts of Europe. And, after fettling in his native country, it was his principal aim to employ the knowledge which he had acquired to the benefit of his fellow subjects. But, by the rapid progress of a fatal fever, occurring to him at the prime of life, his country is deprived of many advantages which it might have derived from him, and friendless merit has loft a steady and difinterested patron.
