Acts, xviii. 28. "From a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation, through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. I charge thee therefore before God, and "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by THESE ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust." 2 Pet. i. iv. "Give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.-Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them.-Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee." 1 Tim. iv. 13, 15, 16. In the following passages also, Christ and the Spirit testify to the efficacy of the DECLARATORY WORD, whether called the truth, the word of truth, the Gos pel, the law of God, or the word of God; and which is revealed to us by the SPIRIT, through the Scriptures.. "Sanctify them through | Lord is sure, making wise thy truth; thy word is the simple: the statutes truth. For their sakes I of the Lord are right, sanctify myself, that they rejoicing the heart: the also might be sanctified commandment of the Lord through the truth. Nei- is pure, enlightening the ther pray I for these eyes. By them is thy alone, but for them also servant warned; and in which shall believe on me, keeping of them there is through their word." Jno. great reward." Ps. xix. xvii. 17, 19, 20. 7, 8, 11. "Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you." Jno. xv. iii. "God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation, through sanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth." Thes. ii. 13. 2 vi. 17. "He hath made my mouth like a sharp sword.” Isa. xlix. 2. "I hewed them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth." Hosea, vi. 5. "The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Heb. iv. 12. The Testimony of the SPIRIT to the efficacy of the INSPIRED WORD, in a few more passages from the Old Testament record. "As the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater ; so shall my word be that goeth forth of my mouth. It shall not return unto me void; but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper whereto I sent it." Isa. lv. 10, 11. "Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed; but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded." Prov. xiii. 13. 66 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Ps. cxix. 105. "The commandment is a lamp, and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life." Prov. vi. 23. "He that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the Lord. Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces ?" Jer. xxiii. 28, 29. "They made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of Hosts hath sent in his Spirit by the former prophets : therefore came a great wrath from the Lord of Hosts." Zech. I have more understanding than all my teachers for thy testimonies are my meditation." vii. 12. . 99. 66 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children." Hosea, iv. 6. Christ and the Spirit testify to the same efficacious WORD OF GOD, as it was PREACHED BY THE APOSTLES, and is now, by the Scriptures, communicated to us. "Preach the Gospel to every creature. He that believeth, and is baptized, shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." Mark, xvi. 15, 16. 66 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the Gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand, by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you, first of all, that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures; and that he was buried; and that he rose again the third day, according to the Scriptures." 1 Cor. xv. 1-4. "When ye received the word of God, which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men; but (as it is in truth) the word of God; which ef fectually worketh also in you that believe." 1 Thes. ii. 13. "In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the Gospel of your salvation." Eph. i. 13. "These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readinesss of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so, therefore many of them believed." xvii. 11, 12. Acts, "God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness." 17, 18. Rom. vi. "He continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them." Acts, xviii. 11. "It is not reason that we should leave the word of God.-But we will give ourselves continually prayer, and to the MINISTRY OF THE WORD." Acts, vi. 2-4. Ist. By the WRITTEN WORD is the knowledge of God's to had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet." Rom. vii. 7. 2nd.-Encouraging declaration of Christ to keep his word. "He that hath my com- love me, he will keep my mandments, and keepeth words: and my Father them, he it is that loveth will love him, and we will me and he that loveth come unto him, and make me shall be loved of my our abode with him.-He Father, and I will love that loveth me not, keephim, and will manifest eth not my sayings." Jno. myself to him.-If a man | xiv. 21, 23, 24. EXTRACT IV. Blood of Christ. "I don't want to express a great many words, but I want you to be called home to the substance. For the Scriptures and all the books in the world can do no more.-JESUS COULD DO NO MORE THAN TO RECOMMEND TO THIS COMFORTER, which was this light in him.
