PREFACE.

The following pages are principally the result of the experience acquired during nearly ten years' residence in Australia. Many of the statistical details have been taken from the last Report of the Colonial Land and Emigration Commissioners, and from the recent valuable work of Mr. Montgomery Martin, upon Port Phillip. The remainder are chiefly collected from official data, and may, in general, be relied upon for their accuracy.

Such sources of information may not be accessible to all, and even when they are attainable, it is well known that few are
