History of Turkey which appeared in the "Stories of the Nations" series. The History of Ottoman Poetry of which the first volume was published by Messrs. Luzac & Co. in 1900 was, however, the work of his life for which all the rest was but a preparation. Much as the remaining volumes of this monument of scholarship and taste must necessarily lose for lack of his final revision, it will be a satisfaction to all Orientalists to know that, except for a few chapters which the author evidently intended to add, the whole work exists in manuscript, and will be edited by Mr. E. G. Browne of Cambridge. It will comprise four more volumes, the last containing the Turkish texts translated in the earlier portion of the work; and the second volume, which was left practically ready for press, will very shortly be placed in the hands of the printers (Messrs. Brill of Leyden), so that its appearance may be expected within the current year. For a further account of Mr. Gibb's literary remains, and of the very valuable collection of Turkish and other Oriental manuscripts which he has bequeathed to the British Museum, the reader is referred to the Athenaeum of Jan. 13 of the current year, pp. 81-82. The destination of the remainder of his library, which also contains many rare and valuable books, has not yet been determined by his family. By his exquisite scholarship and indefatigable industry Mr. Gibb won the respcct and admiration of all who were capable of appreciating his work, while by those who knew him personally he was beloved for his amiable disposition, his unfailing kindness, and the nobility of his character. His loss, whether as a scholar or a friend, can neither be estimated nor made good.

OBITUARY. The death is announced of Prof. Cornelis Petrus Tiele of Leyden, at the age of seventy-one. He was probably the greatest authority in Europe on the comparative history of religion, and as such was selected in 1896 to deliver the Gifford Lectures in Scotland, published as "Elements of the Science of Religion" (1897). He made many friends among us then and during other visits by his genial character and charm of manner. He had been teaching in Leyden since 1877. His books include "Parsism" (1864); "Comparative History of Egyptian and Mesopotamian Divine Worship" (1869-72); "Outlines of the History of Religion" (1877), which passed through two English Editions; "Compendium of the History of Religion", in various issues; "West Asia in the Light of the Latest Discovery" (1893), with English Version (1894); "Babylonisch-Assyrische Geschichte", in German (1886—7); and the important article "Religions" in the "Encyclopaedia Britannica". He was also a well-known preacher, and frequently wrote in the "Theologische Tijdschrift", which he helped to found. (Athenaeum).

OBITUARY.

We regret to have

to record the death, of Professor A. Weber, which took place at Berlin, Nov. 30th last, in his 77th year. With his death one of the greatest Orientalists has passed away. What Weber has done for the Sanskrit and Prakrit studies will always remain of the highest value. His greatest work has been the edition of the "White Yajur-veda" which began to appear in 1849. In 1853 Prof. Weber commenced

his Catalogue of the Sanskrit and Prakrit Manuscripts in the Royal Library, Berlin. This large work completed in 1892 will always remain a standard work. Among his works we quote the following: Indische Skizzen (1857) ; On the Catronjana Mâhâtmyam (1858); Vedische Nachrichten v. d. Naxatra. 2 Parts (1860-62): Indische Streifen. 3 Vols. (1868–79); Academische Vorlesungen über Indische Literaturgeschichte. Mit Nachtrag. (Second edition, 1876 and 1878); History of Indian Literature. Translated by J. Mann and Th. Zachariae (1882); etc., etc.
