We have received a letter figned Clericus Devonienfis, but are unwilling to encourage further difcuffion, particularly angry difcuffion, on the fubject of it. The great error of this and many other writers is that of fuppofing a rivalry where, in fact, there is none.

LITERARY INTELLIGENCE.

Mr. Beloe's fixth Volume of Anecdotes of Literature and fearce Books is completed, and will very fhortly appear.

A very extended work on the fubject of Perfia, by Mr. Malcolm, is in its progrefs through the prefs. It will comprehend three large volumes in quarto.

Mr. Falkner, the author of the Hiftorical Account of Chelfea, has in the prefs an Hiftorical and Topographical Ac count of Fulham. It will be embellished with various engravings, and dedicated to the Bishop of London.

A fmall pofthumous work by the late excellent Bifhop Horne will fpeedily be published, confifting of Confiderations on the Life and Death of Abel, Enoch, and Noah:

A fifth Volume, in quarto, of Mr. Burke's Works has been fome time in the prefs, under the fuperintendence of the Bishop of Rochester, and will appear in Auguft. A feth is printing, and his Life, with a Collection of his Letters, is preparing for publication.

A fourth edition of the late Mr. Riddoch's Sermons will be published in a few days.

The Memoirs of the Margravine of Bareith, the favourite fifter of Frederick the Great, will appear in a few days.. They are publifhed from the original MS. in the hand-writing of the Princels

The Rev. Mr. Efdaile, of Surfleet, Lincolnshire, is print ing a third edition of his Poems. Mr. Efdaile has prefented the Lunatic Afylum in the city of Lincoln with the fam of thirty guineas, on account of the two former impreffions of this publication.

The Beauties of England, now in a courfe of monthly publication, will be extended to twenty volumes, twelve of which are completed. Another volume, containing the Account of Yorkshire, is nearly finished.

Mr. Mant's Bampton Lecture Sermons, entitled an Appeal to the Gofpel, vindicating the National Clergy from the Charge of not preaching the Gofpel, delivered this feafon before the Univerfity of Oxford, have had an unprecedented fale, (two editions having been difpofed of in the courfe of a few weeks), a third impreffion is printing.

A new edition of the Works of the late Mrs. Catharine Talbot, with a Portrait from a miniature in the poffeffion of the late Mrs. Carter, will be publifhed in a few days.

The Poetical Register for 1808 and 1809, being the feventh of the feries, will appear early in Auguft.

A new edition of the Collection of Tracts edited by the late Rev. William Jones, and published by a Society for Reformation of Principles, under the title of the Scholar Armed against the Errors of the Time, is in the prefs.

Mr. Hewlett has completed his elabroate Commentary on the Bible. The work forms three very large, or fix moderate fized quarto volumes, illuftrated with maps, and embellished with upwards of one hundred engravings from the defigns of the best mafters. Among other Prolegomena is an Abridgment of the Hiflory of the Jews, from the time of Ezra to the Deftruction of the Temple by the Romans.

Mr. Meredith, Governor of Winnebah Fort, will fhortly publish An Account of the Gold Coast of Africa, and on the Manners, &c. of the Natives.

Mr. Jackfon is printing at Oxford A Grammar of the EcloDoric, or Modern Greek Tongue, vulgarly called the Romaic; in which the Peculiarities of the Eolo-Doric will be traced to the refpective Dialects of which the modern Greek is compofed.

Mr. Stephens is preparing a Life of the late John Horne Tooke.

The Rev. Alex. Smith, of Keith-Hall, has in the prefs a tranflation of Michaelis's Work on the Mofaic Law.
