A brief religious service was held at the family residence before the funeral, Fr. Keelan, who had been devoted in his attention to Mr. Donahue during his last illness, officiating. Mr. Patrick Donahue and his wife were unable to attend the funeral, by reason of the advanced age and delicate health of the former.

Father Gasson also officiated at the grave. The honorary pallbearers were Admiral Henry Walton Grinnell, Dr. M. F. Gavin, Messrs. Leslie Millar, James Jeffrey Roche, editor of the Pilot, John Hardiman, and M. A. Toland, of the Pilot business department, Mr. John J. Hayes, Dr. W. H. Grainger, Dr. George Galvin, Wm. E. Jones and Edward B. Seaver.

COLLEGE WORLD.

Commander Wainwright, the new superintendent of the Naval Academy at Annapolis, is the lowest ranking officer that ever held that position. Heretofore the desirable post has only been filled by officers with the rank of rear-admiral or captain. Since Admiral Porter, he will be the first superintendent to have a son among the cadets under him.

At the sportsman's show in Boston, Feb. 24, a novel attraction was the swimming relay race of 320 yards between U. of P., Yale and Columbia. The Philadelphians won after a hard struggle in 3 minutes 57 seconds.

Yale students have petitioned the authorities at Washington for a sub-postal station on the Yale campus. Within two or three squares there reside 1000 students, and the carrier in charge has to climb 2500 steps in one delivery.

The Catholics of France subscribe 60,000,000 francs a year to pay the expense of schools, which are unsupported by the state.

The Sisters of St. Joseph are about to erect on the Summer School property at Plattsburgh, N. Y., a collegiate institute for the higher education of women. Sister M. Josephine has been elected superioress of the college.

The desirability of a more direct and efficient medium between the alumni and the university has induced the alumni of Princeton to form a stock company for the publication of an alumni periodical. It is capitalized at $10,000, and the stock is divided into 10,000 shares.

The senior elective in physics at Williams has been offered a choice between a course in mechanics under Dr. Mendenhall of Worcester, or a course in experimental electricity under Dr. Wardner.

The choice of a site for the Harvard Union was voted upon by 1100 undergraduates. Of these 650 voted for the Quincy Street site, where the club in all probability will be located.

The only body which represents the college women in the country is the Association of Collegiate Alumnæ. It was organized in 1882, and has a membership of 2000 out of 12,000 women graduates eligible for membership. This association awards annually a foreign fellowship, and makes other yearly contributions for educational work.

As a result of an enthusiastic outburst on the receipt of the news of the relief of Ladysmith, the students of McGill University caused a riot in the streets of Montreal. They marched to Laval University, the headquarters of the French Canadian University students, and demanded that the British flag be hoisted. This request being refused, they proceeded to attack the institution. After much difficulty the mob was driven off by the police.

Dartmouth is to have a Daniel Webster centennial to observe next year the anniversary of Webster's graduation from that college. Through a gift of Amos Tuck $300,000 has been subscribed for the centennial fund. The graduates will raise the sum to $1,000,000 by popular subscription, and a school of political science will be opened as part of the observance honoring the great statesman.

Prof. Fryer of the University of California, who speaks Chinese fluently, is anxious to have an oriental home established at Berkeley, where Chinese and Japanese students could have their meals cooked and have servants of their own race.

In 1879 there were but 147 students at the Government Indian School at Carlisle, Pa. Now there are registered 910. During the past 20 years, 3783 Indian youths were admitted, of whom 2328 were boys and 1455 girls. The graduates thus far are 209. Not over 30 per cent. turned out are classed as "bad," and there were but two criminals. The students' earnings for the past year were $25,752.76.

Massachusetts Agricultural College receives every year over $16,000 from the government towards its support. The source from which this amount comes is derived from the sale of public lands, and this income is liable to be cut off by the opening up of these lands free to settlers.

Germany has 861 schools in which manual training is taught in 1514 workshops. All but

25 of these schools give instruction in methods of teaching. There are 238 departments of public schools, and 268 are independent. These schools are in 605 different cities and towns. More than 2200 German teachers have taken the instructors' course in manual training.

There are fourteen great scientific institutions in Washington. The collections in them cost $32,000,000, and it requires $3,000,000 a year to maintain them. In regard to scientific collections, all the cities of the continent do not equal Washington.

It is said that the 150 college professors living in Cambridge pay a tax of only $7000. The assessed value of exempted college real estate in that city is $7,088,200, while that taxed is only $479,200. Harvard's tax last year was $5000, while it has real estate and personal property to the amount of $14,000,000 exempted.

A. P. Stokes, who is a student at the Harvard Episcopal Seminary, in addition to being the new treasurer of the Yale corporation, has lately become a trustee of both Wellesley and Wesleyan. On Mr. Stokes' assumption of his duties at New Haven, next June, he will be only 26 years old,
