THE French from Vertinico having

frequently taken Veffels belonging to this land, under pretence of being within three Leagues of their Shore, and on Application made for Redress, their Governor did not grant any, but referred us Home Our Governor fitted out a Sloop, made Reprifals of two of their Ships, and condemn'd them for the fame Reafon. On this they fent a Flag of Truce with a Marque, &c. to follicit their Delivery; and it's now our turn to refer them Home. Here has been little Rain fince January: And we are almost burnt up, fo that Provifion is dear, and Spring-Water is fold to the Poor for 1 s. 6 d. and 25. per Pail, and Ships pay Gs. per Hogshead for Pond-Water.

from our Plantations this Month. Orders to his Agents and Officers in the Indian Nations, not to molest or feize the Traders from that Province, and that the Navigation up the River Savannah should be fettled: During their Stay at Savannah they were handfomely received and entertained by Mr. Oglethorpe, who the Night before they left the Place, gave them a Ball for the Ladies, &c.

Frederica in Georgia, August 30. The Governor of St Augustine having acquainted Mr Oglethorpe, that Don Antonio de Arrodondo was fent Commiffioner from the Governor of Havanna, to make certain Demands and Propofitions to him, he fent out a Sloop to bring Don Antonio by Sea into this Place. There are three Compamies of Foot arrived atSt Augustine from Havanna, under the Command of Don Philip. Don Antonio appeared off this Bar laft Wednesday, in a Spanish Veffel with fix Guns, in Company with the Sloop, and was permitted to come into Jeky! Sound, but not up to the Town. We hear that he folemnly demands, that the English fhould evacuate all the South of St Helene's Sound; and in cafe he does not agree with Mr Oglethorpe, he is to go to Charles-Town with that Meflage. Mr Oglethorpe and he have had several Conferences on board the Hawk Sloop.

PETERSBURG.
THE Perfian Embaflador bere has,
at laft, changed his Note, and in a

Slate Audience of Czarina, instead

to the War with the Turks, and that the Emperor have no Hand in it: 'Tis even affir'd, that his moft Chriftian Majefty will not part with Fort-Kehl or Philips barg till Ruffia makes up Matters with the Porte; for he would not have fuch useful Allies as the Turks deftroy'd, nor the Emperor render'd too powerful by their Spoils; fo that there is an End of feeing the Ger man Army triumphant in Hungary, or the Czarina pufhing her Conquefts in Tar tary: Peace then is to become general, not only in Europe, but in Afia; but per haps not to the Satisfaction of the Mari time Powers, whofe Interefts may not have been confulted by France, their natural Enemy; nor by the Emperor, who is ftill faid to refent their Backwardness in affifting him during the late War. The Dut Cchies of Bergues and Juliers are to be fecured for ever to the Houfe of Sultzbach by a French Power, to the utter Exclufion of the King of Pruffia: The greateft Part of the Auftrian Netherlands to be erected into a Tenth Electorate, and given to the King of Sweden, in the room of the Landgraviate of Heffe-Caffel: Don Carlos to have Poffeffions on the Side of Iftria; and the French a larger Barrier in Flanders, which will undoubtedly give no fmall Uncafinefs to the Dutch. A great many more Changes have been talk'd of, detrimental to the Proteftant Intereft, and the Ballance of Power, which 'tis hoped his Britannic Majefty's Vigilance will guard against.

of enewing the Aflurance he had fo many times folemnly made in the Name of the Sophi his Maiter, That he would never come to an Accommodatiou with the Grand Signior without procuring Rullia to be comprehended in the Treaty, he declared, That the Sophi of Perfia had nor been able to obtain that her Czarian Majefty fhould be called as a contracting Party to the Treaty of Peace concluded between the Turks and Perfians, but that he had managed it, that the quiet Poffeffion of the Daghestan, &c. fhould be preferved to her. The Ruffians are, however, no way obliged to him for this Article, fince the giving them back to the Turkish Empire would have been contrary to his own Interest. The Articles of the Peace are faid to be, That the Grand Signior fhall acknowledge Thamas for King and Sophi of Perfia, and engage to maintain him on the Throne againit all Enemies within or without his Empire: That the Limits and D Bounds of the two Empires fhall be replaced on the fame Foot they were before the War with Perfia; and that the contracting Parties fhall be determined by what was regulated on this Head in the Reign of Sultan Amurath I. which Method of Expreffion is ufed to avoid the difagreeable Term of Ceffion, and to fave This Month Mr. Trevor his Majefty's the Honour of the Porte: A feparate priMinifter at the Hague, complained to the vate Article alfo explaims, that by replacing States General of a Book published there, the Limits is meant the Reftitution to endeavouring to prove, having StadtholdPerfia of all the Conquefts during the late ers is contrary to the Intereft of that ReTroubles. Provifion is likewife made by this Peace for the Followers of the Prophet public, in which alfo is a Letter faid to Omar to have Leave to vifit Mahomet's F be written by King Charles II. to King William III. foon after his being chofen Tomb, free of the Impofitions formerly Stadtholder, in which he offer'd to make exacted on the Perfian Pilgrims: And the him Earl of Holland, and Sovereign of the laft Article ftipulates an Exchange of Pri- Republic; but this Letter not being ge foners, which was begun. nuine, the Court of England infifts that it be fupprefs'd.

A French Vefiel put in here the 12th Inftant, having on Board the Ld Theodore, and his prime Minifter Cofta: They went afhore, and immediately took Poft-Horfes, it is believed for Bologna, and that the Retreat of this Lord was not owing to any Straits he was reduced to, but to fome important Affairs he has to tranfact in Italy, to facilitate the intire Conqueft of Corfica.
