ANTHEMS AND PSALMS.

For Christmas Day.

ANTHEM.

To be used at Morning Prayer, instead of the Psalm, O come, let us sing, etc.

GLORY be to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men.

Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound; they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance;

Through the tender mercies of our God, whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited

us;

To give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet in the way of peace.

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of him who bringeth good tidings; who publisheth peace; who bringeth good tidings of good; who publisheth salvation; who saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth.

There is sprung up a light for the righteous, and joyful gladness for such as are true of heart. Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

Sing unto the Lord, and praise his name; be telling of his salvation from day to day.

Let all those who seek him be joyful and glad in him, and let all such as love his salvation say always, The Lord be praised.

MY

PROPER PSALMS.

PSALM XLV.

Y heart is inditing joyful words; I speak of the things concerning the King; my tongue is as the pen of a ready writer.

Thou art the fairest of the children of men; full of grace are thy lips; for God hath blessed thee for ever.

Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O thou Mighty One, with thy glory and thy majesty.

And in thy majesty ride prosperously, for the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness; and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things.

Thy throne, O God, endureth for ever; the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.

Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; wherefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

I will make thy name to be remembered to all generations; so that the people shall praise thee for ever and ever.

PSALM LXXXV.

LORD, thou art become gracious unto thy land; thou hast turned away the captivity

of Jacob.

Thou hast forgiven the offence of thy people, and covered all their sins.

Thou hast taken away all thy displeasure, and turned thyself from thy wrathful indignation. Turn us then, O God, our Saviour, and let thine anger cease from us.

Wilt thou be displeased at us for ever? and wilt thou stretch out thy wrath from one generation to another?

Wilt thou not turn again and quicken us, that thy people may rejoice in thee?

Show us thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us thy salvation.

I will hear what God the Lord will speak; for he will speak peace to his people and his saints; only let them rot return to their folly again.

For his salvation is nigh those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land.

Mercy and truth shall meet together; righteousness and peace shall kiss each other.

Truth shall flourish out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven.

Yea, the Lord shall show his lovingkindness; and our land shall yield her increase.

Righteousness shall go before him; and shall keep his path continually.

Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God;

Be honor and glory, through Jesus Christ, for ever and ever Amen.

For Good Friday.

ANTHEM.

THE people stood up, and the rulers took counsel together against the Lord, and against his anointed.

They cast their heads together with one consent, and were confederate against him.

They spake against him with false tongues, and encompassed him about with words of hatred, and fought against him without a cause.

False witnesses also did rise up against him; they laid to his charge things that he knew not. For the sins of the people, and the iniquity of the priests, they shed the blood of the just, in the midst of Jerusalem.

He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; he was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.

But thou, Lord, hast highly exalted him, and given him a name that is above every name;

That in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, and every tongue confess that Christ Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
