And on our Werks rely'd!
II.

Strong in the Freedom of our Will,
Firm in our Nature's Pow'rs,

We thought to gain the Heav'nly Hill,
And feize the Crown as ours.

Our good Defires, our Hearts fincere,

Our beft Endeavours ftood,

T' atone for cur Tranfgreffions here,
In Place of JEsu's Blood.

HYMN CLXXIX.

A Funeral Hymn.

I.

N this World of Sin and Sorrow, Compass'd round with many a Care, From Eternity we borrow

Hope, that can exclude Despair : Thee, triumphant GOD and SAVIOUR!

In the Glafs of Faith we fee :

O affift each faint Endeavour!

Raife our earth-born Souls to Thee.

II.

Place that awful Scene before us
Of the laft tremendous Day,

When to Life Thou shalt reftore us,

Ling'ring Ages, hafte away!
Then this vile and finful Nature
Incorruption + shall put on
Life renewing, glorious SAVIOUR!
Let thy gracious Will be done.

HYMN CLXXX.

I.

LORD, how great's the Favour!
That we, fuch Sinners poor,
Can thro' thy Blood's fweet § Savour
Approach thy Mercy's Door,
And find an open || Paffage

Unto the Throne of Grace,
There wait the welcome Meffage
That bids us go in Peace.
II.

LORD, we are helpless Creatures,
Full of the deepeft Need,
Throughout defil'd by Nature,
* Stupid, and inly + dead;
Our Strength is perfect Weaknefs,
And all we have is & Sin,

Our || Hearts are all Uncleannefs,
A Den of Thieves within.

HI.

In this forlorn Condition,

Who fhall afford us Aid! Where shall we find Compaffion,

But in the ** Church's Head?

JESUS, thou art all Pity,

Oh take us to thine + Arms,

And exercise thy Mercy,
To fave us from all Harms.

IV.

We'll never cease repeating,
Our numberless Complaints,
But ever be intreating

The glorious King of Saints :
Till we attain the Image
Of Him we inly love,
And pay our grateful Homage
With all the Saints above.
V.

Then we, with all in Glory,
Shall thankfully relate
Th' amazing, pleafing Story,
Of JESU's Love fo great :
In this bleft Contemplation
We fhall for ever dwell,
And prove fuch Confolation
As none below can § tell.

HYMN CLXXXI,

WH

I.

HAT fhall we render unto Thee,
Thou glorious LORD of Life and Pow'r
Teach us to bow the humble Knee,
Teach us with Thankfulness t' adore ;

To praife Thee as thy Saints above,
To praife Thee for thy wond'rous Love.

II.

When like loft || Sheep, we wander'd wide,
And left the watchful Shepherd's Eye;
When borne along th' impetuous Tide,
Of this Word's Sin and Vanity;

1 Cor. ii. 9. If. iii. 6.

Out

Our Jesus from the Heav'ns came down,
To fave us by his Grace alone.

Tree

(To feek and fave the loft He came)
There was he bound to fet us free
From Death and everiafting Shame :
The Captive Flock from Hell was freed,
And † râniom'd when their Shepherd bled.
IV.

Before the Father's awful Throne :
Our merciful High Priest, He stands,
And interceding for his own,

The purchas'd Remnant now || demands,
His People's everlasting Friend,
Who, loving-loves them to the ‡ End.

[ocr errors]

May+we, his banish'd ones, rejoice,
Him for our LORD and GOD to own;
To take Him as our only Choice,
And cleave to Him, in Love, alone;
Be growing up in Holiness,

Then meet Him in the Realms of Peaces
VI.

Then fhall our grateful Songs abound,
And ev'ry Tear be wip'd away;
No Sin, no Sorrow fhall be found,
No Night o'er-cloud the endleís Day.
O praise Him! all beneath, above,
◇ praise Hun ! praise the GOD of Love!
