morning for trade, with a grand proceffou, along the Paddington line to Bull's bridge, at Uxbridge. Exactly at nine, the Committee, with their friends, in two pleafure-boats, fet fail, with colours and ttreamers flying, each veffel being towed by two hories. At 12 o'clock the company were et at Bull's-bridge by the city thallop (having on-board the fub-committee of the Thames navigation), and several plea fure-boats, with large parties of ladies. On meeting, a falute was fired, and then the proceffion returned in the following order : 1. The Committee, and their friends, in two barges, with the Buckinghamshire band of mufic.

2. The city hallop.

3. Seven pléature-boats.

At half-paft 5 the cavalcade reached the Great Dock. This was announced by the firing of cannon on Welbourn-greenbridge, and a volley of musketry from the town. After three buzzas, the company landed, and walked in proceffion to the Yorkshire Stingo, preceded by the Buckinghamshire band, playing "God fave the King." At half-paft 6, the company fat down to dinner, and fpent the evening with conviviality. Blue and purple rib bands were worn by the ladies, gentlemen, and men employed in the concern, on which were written, "The Marquis of Buckingham, and Succefs to the Grand Jonction canal!" Great praife is due to the Committee for the expedition which they have used fince laft fpring in completing the canal. A long range of warehoufes are nearly finished for the reception of goods. This day not lefs than eight laden barges arrived. A public road, too feet wide, was finished on Monday last to the quay, which is but a few paces from the Edgeware-road. The day proved as propitious as the undertaking is likely to prove a profperous one. The number of perfons prefent could not be less than 20,000. For feveral miles the banks of the canal were lined with people. Several stages were erected for accommodation, and a long ftring of carriages appeared on the public Walk.

Thursday, July 16.

At a general meeting, this day, of the governors of the Westminster General D.fpenfary, in Gerrard street, Soho, William Knox, Efq. V. P. (late under Secretary of State) in the chair, Dr. Samuel Foart Simmons, and Mr. Edward Ford, refigned the offices they have, for more than 20 years, fo ably and judiciously filled, of phyfician and furgeon to that charity. Thanks, in the moft handfome and grateful terms, were unanimoufly voted to each of thefe gentlemen, for their long and meritorious fervices. This charity, which has now been established 27 years, and has afforded Telief to upwards of 100,000 of the fick

poor of this metropolis, has, hitherto, been fupported by a precarious annual fubfcription; amounting, however, in fome years, nearly to 1oool Atalate general meeting of the governo sit was refolve, that, in future, all legacies and donations th ll be laid out in the public funds, and that the dividends only of fuch fums shall he applied to the ordinary expences of the charity. Several liberal benefictions have already been paid-in towards this fund; and it appears, from the printed minutes of the meeting, which have been circulated on this occafion, that Dr. Simmons, Dr. Bland, and Mr. Ford, being defirous of contributing towards the benevolent views of the charity, have given up to it the arrears of falary due to them, to Michaelmas Laft, amounting to 400 gui neas to each of them. The thanks of the meeting were voted to thefe gentlemen, for the handfome manner in which they had renounced their claims on the inftitu. tion and it was unanimously refolved, that Dr. Simmons, Dr. Bland, and Mr. Ford (being themfelves already Governors), should each of them be requested to nominate a perpetual governor of the charity. We are happy to find, that in confequence of thefe fpirited and humane exertions, this excellent inftitution is likely to be permanent.

Wednesday, July 22.

This morning at an early hour, immenfe crowds from the Metropolis and the adjacent parts made their appearance in Hyde Park, to witness the Review of those Volunteer and Affociated Corps, in London and its environs, who fo patriotically enrolled, equipped, and duciplined themleves, at their own expence, for the defence and fafety of their country. The different corps, to the number of 4734, had been drawn up for a confiderable time, when, at 10, his Royal Highnefs the Commander in Chief appeared on the ground, accompanied by his brother the Duke of Kent, Lord Harrington, Lord Cathcart, and feve ral other General Officers, Aids-du-camp, &c. In le s than half an hour afterwards, arrived his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, escorted by the Weftminster cavalry. On the approach of His Royal Highness, General Officer was fent to meet him; and the fpectators univerfally admired the air of dignified courtesy and cafe, with which the latter was received and faluted by a Prince, who cau fo happily combine in his demeanour all the Majefty of his rank, with the elegant and familiar politeness of a gentleman. The Royal Highlanders, commanded by Captain Rofs, were posted in the centre of the line, on ground independent of the other corps, in the angle between the right and left wing; and, on the 5th fignal being given, they commenced the fire by a volley, which was continued by the refpective corps from the centre to

flanks

Banks of the line. The fame was repeated at the 6th and 7th fignol. The various corps then went through their exercifes and evolutions, with a degree of precifion which must reflect the highest honour on their attention to military difcipline. The vollies were in general very regular; and, from the very excellent appearance of the men, the elegance of the uniforms, the fine order of the arms, and the affemblage of beauty, which gave luftre to the fpectacle, the coup d'eil was, upon the whole, extremely magnificent. The favourable weather, the caule of the affemblage, and curiofity fpringing from the moft praiseworthy motives, attracted nearly all the metropolis to Hyde-park. It was computed that, independent of the volunteers, upwards of 3,000 spectators attended. Fashionable females could not be expected to have been very numerous; but, amongst thofe prefent, was Lady Angufta Fredrick, with fome company, in a handfome landau. Innumerable fair forms, fhehered from the fcorching rays of the fun by the protecting parafol, were feen, efcorted by their beaux, tripping over the turf. The furrounding walls were covered with men, women, and children. Every eye fparkled with animation, every heart beat with loyal fervour; the proud name of Briton was vaunted with felf-congratulation; and if the chimerical idea of invafion occurred, not a man prefent but, contemplating this brilliant difplay of the "Amor Patt æ," was enthufiaftically eager to exclam

"And if their flat bottoms in darkness get o'er, [on thore." We foon shall find means to receive them Notwithstanding the immenfe concourfe of fpe&tators, there was scarcely any diforder. A troop of the Horse Guards kept the ground, and prevented the review, from being interrupted by the attempts of fome unthinking perfons to traverte the lines. In one instance, a man obftinately perfifted in endeavouring to cross them, and had nearly reached the oppofite fide of the way, when one of the Horfe Guards lifting his fword in order to intimidate him, he had immediate recourfe to a prudent, but precipitate, retreat, amiait the hootings of the multitude. Not a ferious accident occurred, though pealing bursts of laughter were now and then excited by the cafual breaking of the overloaded branches of the trees, which obliged thofe above to defcend upon the pericrania of thofe belau, with rather more velocity than was agreeable to either party. The three Princes, who never looked better or in higher fpirits, bestowed great praise on the good order and difcipline of the men. The Prince was mounted on the white charger lately prefented to him by his Majetty, of admirable proportions, and elegantly ca

parifoned; and the Duke of York rode a very beautiful brown one. They both looked remarkably well, appeared in high health and fpirits, and the military elegance with which they rode along the line, and easy deportment with which they afterwards received the falutes of the different corps, captivated every fpectator. The review ended about half paft 12, when the feveral corps retired to their respective districts, attended by the praife of the Royal Re viewers, and the approbation of their Commanders and the fpectators, excit-d by their steadiness under arms, regulary of firing, and the high ftate of veteran difcipline which they uniformly exhibited. The Prince, Duke of York, General Of ficers, and attendants, foon after quitted the park, when, by way of fin le, a fe. cond Roval falute of artillery was fired. Thus chafed a fcene, in the highest degree honourable te the country, and which must prove in xp eihbly gratifying both to the public and private feelings of the Royal Family at Weymouth.-On their return from the review, the Prince was cheered by all ranks of people with the most fond and univerfal acclamations, in acknowledgement for which bis Royal Highness and his Royal brothers frequently faluted the concourfe, that furrounded and followed them, in the most graceful manner, by bowing and occasionally taking off their bats.
