MY LORD,

WHEN most people's heads are filled with controversies and disputes, and some of them, all things considered, very scandalous ones, and of most deplorable consequence, (and which, would to God we could have silenced by some means or other !) give me leave to present your Lordship, though not with a fashionable, yet I hope a useful treatise, concerning the regulation of those passion's, the exorbitancy of which is the cause of all this mişchief.

I cannot indeed expect our wits and politicians should vouchsafe to read a book that is so much out of the present way of thinking, and plods on in the old beaten track of practical religion ; but your Lordship, I am very sure, will countenance what you yourself so advantageously promote: and all good men will agree with me in this, that while several worthy persons are zealously contending, and with great strength and evidence, for the Christian faith, others do well to inculcate the duties of
