He was elected town clerk of Newcastle, 4th October, 1742, and he resigned that situation and was succeeded by his son, 17th December, 1750. Mary, his wife, was buried in Bolton Chapel, 7th August, 1750. They had issue, 1. It is a curious fact, that Mr. Burrell should be allied to two of the greatest naval heroes this country can boast of, he being third cousin, through his grandmother, to Lord Collingwood, and through his mother to Lord Nelson. HARFORD, OF BLAISE CASTLE. HARFORD, JOHN-SCANDRETT, esq. of Blaise Castle, in the county of Gloucester, b. 8th October, 1786, m. Louisa, eldest daughter of Richard-Hart Davis, esq. many years representative of Bristol in parliament. Mr. Harford, who succeeded his father in January 1815, acts as a magistrate for Gloucestershire, and served the office of sheriff for Cardiganshire in 1824. He is doctor of civil laws in the University of Oxford, and fellow of the Royal Society. Lineage. The Harfords are of great antiquity. The "cunabula gentis" was Bosbury, in Herefordshire, in the church of which, there are several ancient and handsome monuments of the family, exhibiting their armorial bearings. The branch we are about to treat of migrated from Marshfield, in Gloucestershire, and settled at Bristol in the course of the seventeenth century. JOHN HARFORD, esq. of Bosbury, who m. HENRY HARFORD, esq. of Boreham, in the parish of Warminster, Wilts, whose will, dated 23rd February, 1614, was proved 10th November, 1615, married twice; by his first wife he left a son, HENRY, of whom presently; and by the second, Alice Bradstone, he left another son, BRIDSTOCK, M. D. living in 1686, who m. Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Richard Hereford, esq. of Sufton, in the county of Hereford, (see vol. iii. p. 345), and was father of, BRIDSTOCK, barrister-at-law, and M.P. for the city of Hereford in 1660, who m. first, Catharine, sister of Sir Compton Read, bart. of Shipton, in Oxfordshire, and by her, who died 5th March, 1665, had a son, BRIDSTOCK, M. B. mayor of Hereford in 1697: d. s. p. 18th June, 1713. He m. secondly, Dorothy, dau. and co-heir of John Davies, esq. of Monachtie, in Radnorshire, high sheriff of that county, and widow of John Vaughan, esq. of Hergest; but by her had no child. He m. thirdly, Elizabeth, dau. of Thomas Brydges, esq. of Old Colwall, and relict of John Dennet, esq. of Bosbury, by whom he left at his decease, 20th April, 1683, a daughter, MARY, b. 14th October, 1681, who m. first, 7th March, 1706, Colonel James Jones, of Kington, in the county of Hereford; and, secondly, Edward Broughton, M. D. of the same place. By the former, who died in 1713, she had a son, HARFORD JONES, esq. of Whittorn, who m. Elizabeth,daughter of William Brydges, esq. of Old Colwell, and was grandfather of the present Rt. Hon. Sir HARFORD JONES BRYDGES, bart. of Boultibrook. He is a magistrate and deputy lieutenant for the King's County, and was high sheriff in 1816. |
