he sold to the Countess of Shrewsbury, in 1600. He m. Sarah, widow of Poges, and daughter of Hardwick, and d. in 1632. "From a memorial of his public services (we quote Hunter's Doncaster) drawn up in the latter part of his life, it appears that he accompanied George, Earl of Cumberland, the Great Sea Captain, in his expedition against the Spanish settlements, in the West Indies. He was sergeant major; and at the surrender of Porto Rico, saved the Earl from drowning. The Earl returned, as Camden observes, with more honour than booty. He arrived with his fleet on the English coast, after a long absence, 2nd October, 1558. Henry, died unm.

2. ROGER, of Linacre Hall, who m. a daughter of Columbel, of Darley, and had two sons, GEORGE and Roger. The latter died s. p. the former,

Godfrey, b. at Walton in 1512, m. Margaret, sister and co-heir of William Fitzwilliam, esq. of Aldwark, in Yorkshire, but by her, who died 7th February, 1557, had no issue. He did not long survive his wife, dying at Aldwark, 25th May, 1559. By his will, made 1st February, 1558-9, he leaves to his nephew, Godfrey, son and heir of Sir James Foljambe, knt. the manor of Aldwark, with divers other lands. He left an illegitimate son, Godfrey Foljambe, alias Brownlow, who m. Joan, daughter of George Foljambe, esq. of Barlborough. George, b. at Walton, of Barlborough, in the county of Derby, who m. Dorothy, daughter of Arthur Barlow, of Barlow, in that shire, and had issue, Henry, of Barlborough, who m. Mary, daughter of George, Lord Darcy, of Aston, and relict of Henry Babington, esq. of Dethick.

FOLJAMBE, GEORGE-SAVILE, esq. of Osberton, in Nottinghamshire, and of Aldwarke, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, b. 4th June, 1800; m. 9th December, 1828, Harriet-Emily-Mary, eldest daughter of Sir William Mordaunt Sturt Milner, bart. of Nun Appleton, (by Harriet-Elizabeth, his second wife, daughter of Lord Edward Bentinck,) and by her, who died 28th December, 1830, has an only child,

FRANCIS-JOHN-SAVILE, b. 9th April, 1830.

Mr. Foljambe succeeded to the estates of his grandfather on attaining majority, 4th June, 1821.

Lineage.

The first of this eminent family on record, SIR THOMAS FOLJAMBE, living in the reigns of HENRY III. and EDWARD I. appears either as witness or principal in many charters, and his position amongst the witnesses, either standing first, or where there are other knights named with him, near the

first, shews that he was a man of principal note in his times. In 1272, he was bailiff of the High Peak, in Derbyshire, and at his death, on the Saturday next after the feast of St. Hilary, 11 EDWARD I. he held of the king an oxgang of land by the sergeantry of keeping the king's forests de Campana, which was the style of the forest of the High Peak. His eldest son and heir,

SIR THOMAS FOLJAMBE, knt. living 16 EDWARD I. held lands in Tideswell and Wormhill, and by Catherine, his wife, left a son and successor,

Sir James Foljambe died 26th September, 1558, and lies buried at Chesterfield, where a monument is erected to his memory. His son and successor,

Sir Godfrey died 22nd December, 1584, and was buried at Chesterfield, where a sumptuous monument was erected to his memory by his only son, with an inscription, in which his "innocence, integrity, faith, religion, and hospitality," are praised. He was lord of the manor of Aldwark, and owner of estates at Rawmarsh, Haugh, Skoles, Corteworth, Wynthworth, Peckmylnedam, Gresbroke, Little Dalton, Great Dalton, Ranfield, and Wickersley. His son and successor,

GODFREY FOLJAMBE, esq. of Walton, b. 21st November, 1558, sheriff of Derbyshire 31 ELIZABETH, m. Isabel, daughter of Sir Christopher Wray, knt. lord chief justice of England, but d. s. p. and was buried at Chesterfield, 14th June, 1595. His widow, who survived Mr. Foljambe twenty-seven years,

and during that time held in jointure Walton, with some of the best parts of the Foljambe inheritance, married secondly, Sir William Bowes, knt. of Barnard Castle, in Durham, and thirdly, John, Lord Darcy of Aston. Godfrey Foljambe, was s. by his uncle,

FRANCIS FOLJAM BE, esq. of Aldwarke, who m. Frances, daughter of Thomas Burdett, esq. of Birthwaite, and relict of Francis Wortley, esq. of Wortley, by whom he had two sons, viz.

THOMAS (Sir), knt. who m. Anne, daughter of Sir James Harrington, bart. of Ridlington, but died s. p. His widow wedded, secondly, 11th August, 1613, Sir John Molyneux, bart. of Teversal.

FRANCIS (Sir), knt. who continued the family. Francis Foljambe was buried at Chesterfield, 30th September, 1600. His second son,

SIR FRANCIS FOLJAMBE, of Walton and Aldwarke, was created a BARONET 24th July, 1622, and served as sheriff of Derbyshire in 1633. Sir Francis advanced the family in honour but weakened it by his extravagance. In the family history, he is described as 66 a man of a profuse temper and excessive hospitality." He sold Walton and several other estates. Sir Francis m. first, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir William Wray, of Glentworth, by whom he had an only daughter and heiress,

FRANCES, m. first, to Sir Christopher Wray, and secondly, to John Troutbeck, M.D. She died s. p. He m. secondly, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir George Reresby, by whom he had no issue. She wedded secondly, Edward Horner, esq. of Mells; thirdly, William Monson, Viscount Castlemaine; and fourthly, Sir Adam Felton, bart. of Playford. Sir Francis Foljambe died at Bath, 17th December, 1640, when the baronetcy expired, but the estate of Aldwarke, and the representation of the family devolved on the male heir,

PETER FOLJAMBE, esq. of Steeton b. in 1599, who m. at Hope, 19th September, 1642, Jane, daughter and co-heir of Ellis Woodruffe, esq. of Hope, in Derbyshire, reader and bencher of the Inner Temple, and by her (who died 4th September, 1658, leaving the character of "a most virtuous and judius lady,") had issue,

Godfrey, bapt. at Hope, 16th October, 1645: died in 1665.

George, b. 31st December, 1646; m. Jane, daughter of Thomas Balguy, esq. of Aston, and died s. p. 27th December, 1685.

Peter Foljambe died 26th February, 1668-9, and was s. by his son,

FRANCIS FOLJAMBE, esq. of Aldwarke, b. at Steeton 26th February, 1643, who m. Elizabeth, eldest daughter and co-heir of George Mountaine, esq. of Wistow, by Mary, his wife, daughter of Sir Thomas Gower, bart. of Stittenham, and by her, who was born at Wistow, 25th July, 1647, and died 12th September, 1703, had issue,

Godfrey, b. 13th June, 1669, died young, buried at Ecclesfield. George, b. 28th August, 1672, died young, buried at Ecclesfield. FRANCIS, heir to his father. Jane, bapt. Ist June, 1671, m. at Rawmarsh, 5th July, 1692, to Thomas Edmunds, esq. of Worsborough. Francis Foljambe died at Aldwarke, 15th May, 1707, and was buried at Ecclesfield. He was seized of the manors of Aldwarke, Rawmarsh, Dalton, Thorp Hesley, Wadworth, Slade Hooton, Mexborough and Steeton, with the rectory of Thickhill, and of lands at Fairburn, Rotherham, Wentworth, &c.

His only surviving son and successor, FRANCIS FOLJAMBE, esq. of Aldwarke, wedded, Mary, daughter of Thomas Worsley, esq. of Hovingham, and had issue,

Catherine, bapt. 18th August, 1716, m. at Rawmarsh, 3rd December, 1735, to Henry Ibbetson, esq. of Leeds, afterwards Sir Henry, and died s. p. 17th October, 1740.

ANNE, bapt. 20th May, 1720, m. at Rawmarsh, 7th January, 1747-8, to John Moore, esq. of Kingston-upon-Hull, and dying 4th October, 1751, left an only child,

FRANCIS-FERRAND MOORE, of whom presently, as successor to his uncle.

Frances, bapt. 18th August, 1724, m. to John Twigge, esq. of Bakewell, and died 13th July, 1763, leaving a son, Thomas-Francis Twigge, M.A rector of Kelsey, in Lincolnshire, and of Tickhill: d. s. p. in July,

1821. Mr. Foljambe died 6th December, 1752, and was buried in the vault at Ecclesfield. On a monument in Ecclesfield Church, it is recorded that his "memory will long be cherished by friends, neighbours, acquaintances, tenants, and servants: for he was jealous in friendship, had ability and inclination both to advise and assist, was cheerful in his conversation, a kind landlord, and an indulgent master." His only son to survive him,

THOMAS FOLJAMBE, esq. of Aldwarke, b. 23rd July, 1711, was sheriff of Yorkshire in 1755. He m. Sarah, daughter of William Spencer, esq. of Bramley Grange, but had no issue. His widow m. secondly, Edmund Hutchinson, of Bath. Mr. Foljambe died 28th March, 1758, and was s. by his nephew, FRANCIS-FERRAND MOORE, esq. who assumed the surname and arms of FOLJAMBE, in compliance with the wills of his grandfather and uncle, and they were confirmed to him by act of parliament. He sometime represented the county of York in parliament, and served the office of sheriff in 1787. He m. first, Mary Arabella, one of the two daughters and co-heirs of John Thornhaugh, esq. of Osberton, Notts, (who assumed the name of Hewet,) by Arabella, his wife, sister of Sir George Savile, bart. M.P. and by her, who died 28th December, 1790, had issue,

Mr. Foljambe m. secondly, 12th June, 1792, Lady Mary Arabella Lumley, daughter of Richard, fourth Earl of Scarborough, but her ladyship died s. p. in 1817. Mr. Foljambe died at Osberton in 1814, and was s. by his grandson, the present GEORGE SAVILE FOLJAMBE, esq. of Osberton and Aldwarke.
