He took an active part against the revolutionary party, and was frequently engaged against their armies in the field, and in consequence he lost an ample fortune in actual possession, as well as in reversion, and his claims as the eldest son of the representative of the family, in the manor of Cortlandt, &c. became forfeited. He m. 2nd August, 1762, Catharine, (who died at Torquay, Devon, 22nd February, 1828), daughter of Jacob Ogden, (by Elizabeth Bradford, whose only brother claimed to be entitled to the earldom of Bradford at the demise, in 1762, of the fifth earl, but died before his title was established), by whom he had twenty-three children, of whom the following lived to years of maturity, 1.
