1759-63

A highly interesting relic of one of the earliest English engineers, containing memoranda in connexion with his pioneer work in navigable canals, and his invention of an improved Newcomen engine.

The great reputation of Brindley was gained in civil engineering. Having been called in by the Duke of Bridgewater in 1759 to advise upon the project for forming a canal by which the produce of the Worsley coal-mines could be cheaply transported to Manchester, he produced a plan of striking originality, including the construction of an aqueduct by which the canal was to be carried over the river Irwell. This canal was the first of any importance in England, and formed the commencement of the system of inland navigation in this country. Brindley's next work was the Bridgewater Canal connecting Manchester and Liverpool, and this was soon followed by numerous others."

'He remained to the last illiterate, hardly able to write and quite unable to spell. He did most of his work in his head, without written calculations or drawings, and when he had a puzzling bit of work he would go to bed and think it out'.-D. N. B.

Moxon, 1659 THE VERY RARE ORIGINAL ENGLISH EDITION, unknown to Lowndes and Watt. The machines described are chiefly based on the hydraulic theorems published by SALOMON DE CAUS, the author's father (q. v. infra). They include engines 'to raise water by means of falling water' (a pet perpetuum mobile), 'to counterfeit the voice of small birds by means of water and air', 'an Engin which shall move of itself' [worked by the expansion of air heated by the sun, and therefore a prototype of all heat-engines], 'to represent divers birds which shall sing diversly when an owl turns towards them,' 'to make organs to sound alwaies when the sun shall be south', and many other ingenious contrivances. Pp. 1-16 comprise an explanation of hydraulic principles, illustrated by woodcuts. It would be unkind to perpetual-motioners to dwell on this work on Water-works being translated by a Leak!

3389 CAUS (Salomon de) Les RAISONS des FORCES MOUVANTES, avec diverses MACHINES, tant utilles que plaisantes, aus quelles sont adioints plusieurs Desseigns de GROTES et FONTAINES; with 2 engraved titles, and very numerous full-page and other engravings on copper, besides woodcuts, illustrating a great variety of curious Machinery, large folio, old calf, neatly rebacked (first engraved title slightly soiled, otherwise a FINE COPY); excessively rare, £8. 8s

Francfort, Jan Norton, 1615

FIRST EDITION of this celebrated work. 'In the first part occur his enunciations of the theorems of the expansion and condensation of steam, and of the elevation of water by the application of heat, which have gained for him in some quarters the honour of being the first inventor of the steam engine It is almost certain that Edward Somerset, 2nd Marquis of Worcester, to whom this honour has also been ascribed, and later engineers, knew and developed the principles enunciated by de Caus.'-D. N. B.
