THE EQUITY OF THE DIVINE DISPENSATIONS.

I

FATHER of men! who can complain
Under thy mild and equal reign?
Who does a weight of duty share
More than his aids and pow'rs can bear?

II

With diff'ring climes and diff'ring lands, With fruitful plains and barren sands, Thy hand hath form'd this earthly round, And to each nation set its bound.

[ocr errors]

With like variety thy ray

Here sheds a full, there fainter day;
While all are in their measure show'd
The way to happiness and GOD.

IV

O the abounding love which brought
To us, the words by Jesus taught!
So blest and with such hopes inspir'd,
How much is giv'n, how much requir'd!

GOD THE REFUGE OF HIS SERVANTS.

I

How are thy servants blest, o LORD!
How sure is their defence!
Eternal wisdom is their guide,
Their help, omnipotence.

II

In foreign realms, and lands remote,
Supported by thy care,

They pass unhurt, through burning climes,
And breathe in tainted air.

III

Thy mercy sweetens ev'ry soil,
Makes ev'ry region please;
The hoary frozen hills it warms,
And sinooths the boist'rous seas.

I'V

In midft of dangers, fears, and death,
Thy goodness we'll adore;
And praise thee for thy mercies past,
And humbly hope for more.

V

Our life, whilst thou preserv'st that life,
Thy sacrifice shall be;

And, O

may death! when death shall come, Unite us, LORD! to thee.

GOD OUR PORTION HERE AND HEREAFTER.

I

GOD! Our support and only hope,
Our help for ever near!

Thy mercy keeps our spirits up
In all we see or fear.

II

Thy counsels, LORD! shall guide our fect
Through this dark wilderness;
Thine hand conduct us near thy scat,
To dwell before thy face.

III

No blessing equal to thy love
We through creation see:
On earth beneath, in heav'n above,
Whom have we, LORD! but thee?

IV

The man, who far from thee removes,
Shall find his comforts die;

Not all the vanities he loves

Can peace or hope supply.

V

But to draw near, my GOD! to thee,
Will prove our best employ;

In life our sweetest pleasure be,
In death our only joy.

RELIGIOUS REVERENCE AND OBEDIENCE.

WITH ardour I'll thy favour seek;
O let me never stray

From thy commands, O GOD of love!
Nor tread the sinner's way.

II

Thy word I'll store within my heart,
To keep my mind serene,
And be an everlasting guard
From ev'ry rising sin.

111

My heart, with sacred rev'rence, hears
The threat'nings of thy word;
My anxious mind, with trembling, fears
Thy judgments, O my LORD.

IV

O GOD! resign'd, I'll hope and wait
For thy salvation still;

While thy whole law is my delight,
And I obey thy will.

RESIGNATION TO AND RELIANCE UPON GOD.

I

WHATE'ER thy providence denies
I calmly would resign,

For thou art just, and good, and wise:
O bend my will to thine!

II

Whate'er thy sovʼreign will ordains,
O give me strength to bear;
Still let me know a father reigns,
And trust a father's care.

III

If pain and sickness rend this frame,
And life almost depart;

Is not thy mercy still the same
To cheer my drooping heart?

IV

Thy ways, great GOD! are little known
To my weak erring sight;
Yet shall my heart, believing, own
That all thy ways are right.

V

My GOD! my father! blissful name!
Beyond expression dear!

If thou accept my humble claim,
I take my leave of fear.
