Then shall be read a lesson, taken out of the Old Testament; after which the following psalm.

Psalm CXLV.

I WILL extol thee, O GOD! my king! and I will praise thy name for ever and ever. 2 Every day will I tbank thee, and praise thy name for ever and ever.

3 Great is JEHOVAH, and highly to be praised his greatness is unscarchable.

4 Generation to generation shall celcbrate thy works, and declare thy power. 5 They shall speak of thine honour, thy glory, thy praise, and wonderful works.

6 Men shall tell of the might of thy terrible acts, and discourse of thy greatness.

7 They shall largely commemorate thy great goodness; and sing aloud of thy righteousness.

8 JEHOVAH is gracious and merciful; slow to anger, and abundant in kindness. 9. JEHOVAH is good unto every man, and his mercy is over all his works.

10. All thy works shall celebrate thec, o JEHOVAH ! and thy saints shall praise thee. 11 They shall tell of the glory of thy kingdom, and speak of thy power;

12 That thy power, thy glory, and the mightiness of thy kingdom, may be made known to the sons of men.

13 Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.

14 JEHOVAH upholdeth all such as are falling; and lifteth up those who are bowed down.

15 The eyes of all wait upon thee, and thou art he who givest them their food in

its season.

16 Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living creature. 17 JHOVAH is righteous in all his ways, and bountiful in all his works.

18 JEHOVAH is near unto all those who

call

call upon him to all those, who call upon him in sincerity.

19 He accomplisheth the desire of all those who fear him; he heareth their cry, and saveth them,

20 JEHOVAH preserveth all those who love him; but destroyeth all those who are wicked.

21 My mouth shall speak of the praise of JEHOVAH; and all flesh shall praise his holy name for ever and ever. Amen.

Then shall be read a lesson, taken out of the New Testament, after which the hymn following.

Luke, i. 68-75.

PRAISED be JEHOVAH, the GOD of Israel; for he hath kindly regarded and delivered his people;

2 And hath raised up a mighty deliverance for us,in the house of his servant David; 3 As he promised by the mouth of his holy prophets, who have prophesied ever since the age began;

4 That we should be preserved from our enemies, and from the hands of all who 'hate us:

t

5 That he might show his kindness, and remember his holy covenant with our fathers.

6 And that we, being delivered from the hands of our enemies, might pay our religious service unto him, without fear;

7 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. Amen.

Then shall be read three Collects; the first of which shall be one of the two following, at the choice of the minister, unless where there is one appointed to be used on some particular occasion: the second, for peace: the third, for protection.

¶ Minister.

Let us pray.

O GOD! kind and merciful! who hast caused all holy scriptures to be written for our learning; grant that we may in such manner hear, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them; that, by patience, and the comfort of thy holy word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the joyful hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given unto us by Jesus Christ. Amen.

Or,

Or,

ALMIGHTY and everlasting GOD! who art always more ready to hear than we to pray; and art wont to give more than either we desire or deserve: forgive us those things, o merciful GOD! of which our consciences do accuse us, and bestow those good things for which we are encouraged to ask in thy most holy word, revealed unto us by Jesus Christ our lord. Amen.

Christmas-Day.

O ALMIGHTY FATHER! who alone art from everlasting; who didst cause thy holy servant Jesus to be born into the world, that he might declare thee the only true GOD, and himself thy messenger to bring mankind to the practice of holiness, and the enjoyment of life eternal: grant to us, so to profit by his doctrines and precepts, that we may finally obtain the reward which he hath promised to all his true disciples, and live with him in thy heavenly kingdom for ever. Amen.
