For persons troubled in mind or in conscience.

O ALMIGHTY GOD! the father of mercies, and the GOD of all comforts! we beseech thee, look with compassion upon this thine afflicted servant. Thou permittest his former offences severely to afflict him; and his mind is full of trouble. But, o merciful GOD! who hast caused thy holy word to be written for our learning and improvement, that, through patience and comfort of the scriptures, we might have hope; give him a right understanding of himself, and of thy threats and promises; that be may neither cast away his confidence in thee, nor place it any where, but in thy mercy and forgiveness. Give him strength, O GOD! under all his trials, and heal all his troubles. Preclude him not from thy mercy, but make him to hear of joy and gladness, that he may rejoice. Deliver him from all disquieting fears, and give him peace now and for ever. Amen.

THE BURIAL OF THE DEAD.

The minister meeting the corpse at the entrance of the church-yard or burying-ground: or when it is brought into the church, shall say;

"I AM the resurrection unto life;" saith our lord: "he, who believeth on me, though he be dead, will live: and no man living, who believeth on me, will die for ever. John xi. 25, 26.

¶ Afterwards shall be read one, or both, of the following psalms;

Psalm XXXIX.

I SAID: "I will take heed unto my ways, that I offend not with my tongue. 2 "I will keep my mouth, as it were with a bridle, while the wicked are in my sight."

3 So I was dumb, and remained in silence; I refrained from speaking even what was good, but my sorrow increased:

4 Mine heart grew hot within me; at last, the heat increased, and I spoke with my tongue, and said:

5 "Make known unto me, O JEHOVAH! mine end, and how short the number of my days, that I may know how perishable I am.

6 "Lo! thou hast made my days, as it were, a span long, and mine age is even as nothing before thee: surely, every man, at best, is altogether vanity.

7 "Surely, man walketh after a shadow, and needlessly disquieteth himself; he accumulateth riches, but knoweth not who shall inherit them.

8" What then, O JEHOVAH! is mine hope? Truly my whole hope is from thee. 9 "Oh! acquit me from all my transgressions; and suffer me not to be the reproach of the fool.

Io "I was silent, and opened not my mouth because thou so ordainedst it. ; II" But remove thy chastisement from me; I am consumed by a stroke of thine hand.

12 "When thou correctest man for iniquity, thou makest his desirable things to consume like a cancer; surely, every man is altogether vanity.

13 "Hear my supplication, O JEHOVAH! incline thine car unto my cry; be not regardless of my tears.

14" For I am a stranger with thee; a sojourner, like all my forefathers.

Now unto JEHOVAH, immortal, invisible, the only GOD;

Be honour and glory, through the gospel of Jesus Christ, for ever.

Or, psalm xc.

Amen,

JEHOVAH ! thou hast been our refuge, from one generation to another.

2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art GOD.
