For persons troubled in mind or in conscience. O ALMIGHTY GOD! the father of mercies, and the GOD of all comforts! we beseech thee, look with compassion upon this thine afflicted servant. Thou permittest his former offences severely to afflict him; and his mind is full of trouble. But, o merciful GOD! who hast caused thy holy word to be written for our learning and improvement, that, through patience and comfort of the scriptures, we might have hope; give him a right understanding of himself, and of thy threats and promises; that be may neither cast away his confidence in thee, nor place it any where, but in thy mercy and forgiveness. Give him strength, O GOD! under all his trials, and heal all his troubles. Preclude him not from thy mercy, but make him to hear of joy and gladness, that he may rejoice.
