"And the Lord heard the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother; and Elijah said, "See! thy son liveth!""

It must have been a fine sight! I dare say the little boy threw his arms around his mother's neck, and wept for joy. And no doubt, but that the big tears of gratitude to God trickled fast one after another, down the mother's cheeks.

All the family of God shall awake from the tomb; they shall come forth, and smile with joy. There shall not be one little infant left hehind. Jesus hath said, "I will ransom them from the power of the grave. I will redeem them from death. O death! I will be thy plague! O grave! I will be thy destruction! This mortal shall put on immortality."

STORY XVIII.

THE KING WHO HAD HIS THUMBS AND GREAT TOES CUT OFF.

THERE was a great king, and his name was Adoni-bezek. He was a very wicked, and a very cruel man.

He fought against the nations all around him; he overcame and oppressed them, and took seventy kings as his captives.

To shew how mighty he was, and how completely he had triumphed over them, he had their thumbs and great toes cut off, and they were put under his table, and he threw meat to them, as he did to his dogs.

He was so foolish as to think that his grandeur and his power would last always. He had gone on so long in his sins, that he imagined, either that God did not see, or that he did not regard what he had done. Because God's judgments were not executed on him specdily, his heart was set in him to do evil.

But his sins found him out. The unfruitful tree, or the tree which brings forth nothing but bad fruit, shall assuredly be cut down, and cast into the fire.

At last, God sent his servants to call this cruel wretch to an account for his wickedness and cruelty. They took him alive; he too was a helpless prisoner; and hearing what he had done, they cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

Then it was that Adoni-bezek said, "Threescore and ten kings having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table; as I have done, so God hath requited me."

We see, that sooner or later, God always punishes the ungodly, either in this world, or in another. He may have long patience with them, but at last he strikes the blow. And those who shew no mercy, shall have judgment without

mercy..

The measure men mete to others, is often, even in the present world, measured to them again. It was so with Adoni-bezek. It was so with Haman. He had prepared a gallows to hang Mordecai,-and though the thought never once entered his mind, he was actually building it for himself. He was hanged thereon.-Joseph's brethren sold him for a slave into Egypt, and in that very land

they were all brought into bondage, and treated as bondmen. "Verily, there is a reward for the righteous,-verily, there 's a God that judgeth in the earth."

STORY XIX.

THE WICKED KING, WHO CUT THE WORD OF GOD TO PIECES WITH HIS PENKNIFE, AND THEN BURNED IT.

I WILL tell you of a wicked king, who would not mind what God said to him.

His name was Jehoiakim. He was the son of the good king Josiah. No doubt, but that his pious Father taught him better; but he was like some children I have known, who did not mind what their teachers and parents said to them, and so he came to no good.

He had a fine palace, it was very large; there were a great many windows in it. The rooms were all ceiled with sweet cedar-wood,and painted with a deep scarlet color.

But the great God was displeased with him, and with his subjects, because they worshipped idols,-gods of wood and stone, which are no gods,-and because of their wickedness.

And he sent Jeremiah the Prophet with a message to them, to tell them that if they did not repent, and forsake their sins, that they should be taken into captivity, and punished.

But they would not hearken to the Prophet. The king indeed was very angry with him, and ordered that he should be shut up in prison.

And they put Jeremiah in the dungeon, so that he could not preach any more. The Lord told him to write what he bade him on a roll, and give it to a friend of his, whose name was Baruch; and he did so. And Baruch went into the temple, and read the word of the Lord from the roll among the people.

The great men of the land heard of the word of the Lord which had been read, and they sent for Baruch, and he came and read it to them. And they went and told the king of it.
